You have the cold start clunk noise like many Worldwide of us.
Cause of the clunk noise is the dry vanos-gears from the S65 ...And sometimes the clunk noise rattles as well .
DD's don't have this noise , only garage queens having the clunk noise and that's about + 50% Worldwide...

Oil won't change it. I've changed my own oil at 5,000 mile intervals since I've had it with BMW Castrol and their new Mpower garbage now. Both produce the ticking at low RPM and no strain on the motor. Drive thru's really make the noise prevalent. If you give it normal gas it goes away because of normal engine noise at that point.

Everyone seems to accept this but I just can't. Something can be adjusted/replaced/fixed to get rid of this but what? 3 BMW dealers have left me with service tickets saying something to the effect...."operates as designed". I refuse to believe it is a heat shield issue, injector noise, or rod bearings. I would believe Hydraulic valve adjuster, sump chain, flywheel or possibly wasted motor mounts but I do not have a lift to stand under.

I totally agree with you on this. BMW at least told me "we don't know what it is. You'll have to wait until something breaks", which is a better answer than saying it is the heat shield or something lame like that. I have inspected visually all one could do without taking the motor apart. Can't find anything.

I decided to change the oil last night and found a couple of things, but don't know whether or not they are related, but for whatever reason, I just can't link pics and/or videos to my post. Will try again later or tomorrow.

EDIT: Pics will disappear as soon as I close Google Photos. Will try to work this out if anyone is interested in seeing them. Sorry for the mess.

Hello Everyone,

Changed the oil last Wednesday; oil had 3,726 miles on it (usually changed every 3k miles).

I noticed two things: oil had what looks like metal particles and the oil filter housing has some wall scuffing. Scuffing is on vertical orientation, all pretty much identical and only at an isolated spot (pics below). I am assuming that the metal-like particles are from there, but can't be 100% sure. Oil is going to be sent for analysis; I should know more later.

The dry start noise did not happen this time. As I have stated before, this is not a regular thing. However, I primed the filter almost completely this time as opposed to just getting it soaked half way. Coincidence? Will get the answer to that in 6 months time when next oil change is due. The running ticking noise decided not to show up this time as well. It seems both these noises have their own personality and decide when to come or go.

Oil level indicator didn't like the oil change much; it shows the level short a bit. Will leave it as it is for the time being as engine has 9 liters in. Engine oil level sensor has been replaced 3 times under warranty. It may be time to replace it again.

Oil used was Castrol Edge 10W60.

I can't say anything bad about Liqui Moly, especially because I have used it several times, but I have to admit that the first time the noise started was when I changed to Liqui Moly on this motor. But it happened with Castrol and the new stuff thereafter. I think LM, Castrol and the M thing oil are just as good.

Like I said, I can't and will not say anything bad about Liqui Moly and I believe it was a coincidence that the noise started when I first used it on this car. I really believe you should be OK with LM. It is a great oil, great reputation and used on DTM and other classes in Germany. BMW will also tell you to use their oil. But that doesn't mean it is the only oil. You should be just fine with LM.

Not a single tick since last oil change (Castrol).

Hi all,

Add another LM tick victim here.
First change to LM and within 50km I have the intermittent tick now. I have put only about 250-300kms on the car since the service and it is still there, it makes me not want to even start the car

Questions:
What is it about LM that is causing this? oil is the only variable that has changed so there must be a significant difference in the formulation or properties of LM.

I am going to change out the bearings ASAP, as soon as I can source some BE shells and studs, has anyone correlated the ticking to imminent or advanced bearing failure?

Cheers,
Craig

The tick in question has zero to do with bearings. If something in the big end was loose enough to be that audible, the engine would've failed quickly.

Now that you guys mention it, my tick started in October after I switched from Castrol to LM oil as well....

Lot of us running LM with no issue, its a better oil. Might just be hearing your lifters, or injectors. Not bearings or like stated above you would be on side of road real quick.

This by all means is not bearing related, but the ticking noise started when I first switched to LM on this motor. I believe LM is as good or better than Castrol and I use it in many different applications.
But a pattern is starting to form I guess.

Hey guys just a quick update. Still using LM oil. Car is still running fine. 67,000 miles & the tick is still there. Just replaced my rod bearings. It's most likely a heat thing causing this noise.
Using MOS2 seems to make it go away though.

I get the ticking after every oil change when the oil is fresh. As I put some miles on the oil the ticking slowly starts to go away. The more miles you put on the oil the less ticking you'll get. If you change your oil every 3-5000 miles you'll always have some ticking.

I had an awesome BMW tech who's built a few of these engines listen to the noise when I first went to the LM oil. He immediately diagnosed it as valvetrain noise specifically the lifters.
