Interested in this, curious as well what is involved in making the key work. Would it need to be cut by BMW dealership? $30 sounds like a great deal, but what is the catch?

From my research its easy to program a kay. Hold it to the right of the steering colum and (while you have the original or another working key on you in the car) start the car and it thats it. The iDrive will pop up and display setting for the new key. but this is for brand new (virgin) keys. I am waiting to verify with a local dealer to see if this can be done for a "non-virgin" key.

From what I was able to find in the forum is the that a non-virgin key with CA can't be reprogrammed without erasing the old program in the key. Not sure if this applies to non-CA equipped cars though. There is a company someone had posted http://www.keylessentryremotefob.com...p/bmwflash.htm that offers the erase/flash service for a fee. Don't know anything about this company though, I just copied and pasted the link for everyone to see

I took my used key fob to my service manager and they programmed it for me in literally less than 5 minutes. They were not happy bc i did not buy a brand new key from them but ive purchased 6 beemers in the last 5 years my service mgr was cool and he programmed it. I am giving a personal testimony so i know used fobs can be programmed. Ive sold other items on this site as well as others and i would not sell something that could not be used. Thanks everyone!

The problem is that my local dealers told me they cant do that :/ I am sure they are either being asses and not wanting to do that or they are telling the truth and may not know that they can do it.

Its a great deal for someone that has a local dealer that can reprogram these keys to work like a regular CA key. GL

Can anyone else confirm a used key can be reprogrammed? Everything I have read says they cannot.

I went to two dealerships and was told there is absolutely no way to erase and reprogram a key once it has been used on a car.

The valet door/trunk key with these would be rendered useless.

The remotes are coded to the VIN when ordered from BMW. There may be a way to wipe that data and recode it with a different VIN, but that certainly can NOT be done in a dealership. Think about it this way. If there was a procedure to use any key to start any car, the world would know about it and stealing BMWs would be extremely easy. Used keys simply can not be initialized for any car, period.
