Must be some sort of problem. Few have your experience. Perhaps bad subframe and/or diff bushings are allowing added movement.

Did you have the bushings replaced or just the broken bolt each time? It will probably keep happening if you just replace the bolt. I had a bolt break at 32k miles, so I did the full solid subframe and poly diff bushing upgrade (along with new bolts) to address the issue.

This is both good and bad to see, I wondered if I should consider going to solid diff bushings and now I think it's a pretty definitive yes. Weirdly for me my issues were much less "annoying" but sadly much more "catastrophic"... Seems like everyone else broke the bolts, meanwhile I broke the differential cover by breaking the CAST (that shiny bit at the top left of the diff isn't exactly supposed to be visible. But the bolt actually stayed in place and was still screwed in, holding the other piece of the diff cover in still (also broke the rear portion of the drive shaft and the passenger side rear axle and CV Boot... Not a fun repair... or a cheap one...)

...Thx wheel hop...

Sitrep: Don't do burnouts in a 6-speed e93 M3 while the roof is down, and if you get wheel hop, put the clutch in and drive away normally before you break the thing...

I run stiffer 95A poly diff bushings for this reason, but do get a little diff whine — I would not run solid In my E90x. The E93 have more sound deadening. I drove one with solid diff and subframe bushings and the whine was minor.

Yep I broke a second bolt with solid aluminum subframe bushings and poly diff bushings. Going to do aluminum diff bushings next. Sucks.

With which grade poly did you break a diff bolt? 80A, 95A or 75D?

Which one broke? The rear one?

Whatever the Powerflex purple is. I can't remember. Still had first gear wheel hop with them is the problem.

Driver side bolt. Previously was the passenger side bolt on stock bushings.

Purple is 80A. It is a step up from rubber but nothing like 95A. With the convertible, stepping all the way up to solid might not be too bad. The E93 I drove had mild whine. It did not bother me anymore than the 95A bothers me in my E90.

Was the bolt replaced new when you installed the Powerflex? Trying to determine if there was previous stress damage that caused it to snap now.

All new bolts. I just had too much 1st gear fun with moderate wheel hop over the course of two years.

The driver's side differential bolt snapped on my 2011 E90 M3 (DCT) about a week ago, car has 29,000 miles.

This happened while full throttle on 2nd gear and letting off close to redline, while engine braking just after that there was a horrible grinding sound, i immediately stoped to see if i could notice anything wrong, i did not though.
Got the car home slowly (fortunately really close) and this grinding sound only came while engine braking.

I'm really scared because some people had to replace the differential or even the subframe.

Should i replace bushings and all the bolts even though only one broke?

Thanks.

Yes. You should definitely replace all differential bushings and bolts, and potentially upgrade the diff bushing stiffness to prevent it from happening again. The subframe has to come down so it is a good time to upgrade to solid aluminum subframe bushings too.

Subframe doesn't have to come down to replace the diff bush but it is an opportune time to replace the subframe bush too as you'll have to drop the driveshaft/axles and pull the diff to change the diff bush.

Yea I guess it's possible, but most shops are going to drop the subframe.
