Ignition coil

Nation wide shortage of coils. I bet it will be a problem soon, as e9x m3 get higher milage coil are certain to fail.

Not sure how to address the issue. I have been searching for 7 months now.

Any one with suggestions.
I reached out to ignition projects to see if they would manufacture more but they are not interested.

I have 6 used ones left after I preemptively changed mine last year if you’re in a bind.
There was nothing wrong with them when I swapped them and kind of regret it now.

I’m selling for $35 for 2 plus shipping if applicable.

If you’re set on new, I’ll ask my shop connection if he has access to any.

Hi, I might need to change my coils too. I wonder how many miles did your used ones have? thank you.

Funny timing of this thread, I'm at 60k miles and 2 went bad with no warning. Misfiring, running rough, decide to try drive it in limp mode home. 4 miles later, 5 other coils go bad. Needed to tow. I ordered through my dealership yesterday.

Very odd 7 coils failed within 4 miles.

Literally changed them 2 weeks ago so they're brand new. Wishing I did coils at the same time but like you said the timing of 7 to go bad was very odd. Hopefully my coils come in today.

I bought the car used with 94k and although none of the records provided show they were replaced,I don’t know for sure. So they could be 125k old which is when I changed them. My mechanic (bmw master tech who also does work out of his house) said there was no reason to replace them unless they go bad, but I did anyway since I was replacing plugs at the same time. It was very expensive preventative maintenance that may not have been needed for a long time.

Okay, thank you. I will let you know if I need the coils. I am located in Norcal. I have a misfire code showing up for cylinder 4. Not sure if it's the coils or spark plugs because the plugs haven't been done in 70k miles. Going to do the plugs first.

Yeah it would be nice to find out if shops can find them for sale. My car is running well but since I had my since 2010 and now 120k miles, it was never replaced and plugs replaced many times. I was considering to replace with new.

220,000 no issues. Don't be cheap with your battery use/lifespan and if you mod know what you're doing and the effects on the rest of the system. Don't T-tap and butcher electrical system wiring. You shouldn't need to replace ignition system unless your engine is forced inducted.

I replaced all my coils at 123k 2 weeks ago. I have been chasing a misfire on all 8 cylinders and thought this would do it but nope... still getting random limp modes. Mine were original so dont feel so bad spending the money.

Anyways... i got them at BMW of Ridgefield in CT. Next day delivery

All cylinders misfire can be spark plugs, battery, battery cable.

Check plugs first if you haven't. Also make sure to only use ngk LKR8AP. Also be careful with knock off fake ngk. Amazon had some fake ones.

Look at the battery and find the date on it. More than 4-5 yrs replace it. That's just my opinion though. A misfire on all 8 cylinders is not likely to be plugs, or individual systems at once for that matter. Yes it seems like a lack of voltage. If you have a bunch of other unlikely codes then I double down. When I had electrical system issues.....every code in the book appeared on my dash and I almost shit. But I had ridiculous errors with no signs prior. Battery date was over 4. Replaced and my crap went away until the alternator let go. Lesson I learned:replace battery before it asks! Finicky system power for sure.
