Badge be damned, if the car is great, then no reason not to get it. The problem with the E9X M3 is, or rather looking past it to a newer model, is the intoxicating intake sound. The S65 is just too damn fantastic of an engine, and it's been mated to a great chassis (would have been a fantastic chassis if it was a bit lighter). I cannot imagine another daily driver where I won't get to hear that beautful intake. But if the F80 M3 is a great car, which it can be, I couldn't care less if other, lesser cars have the M badge on them.
As for JC, here he is recently on the E9X M3 (skip to 18:00 for the M3): |

So, let me get this straight... You bought your M3 not because of the driving experience it delivers, but because of some feeling of exclusivity?
I haven't owned as many M3s as some of the members here, but the reason I wanted one was because I knew it would be a lot of fun to drive. I am less concerned about what the model number is compared to other cars.

A limited few people can afford true M Cars. That being said everyone wants one. So BMW is doing the smart thing by having "M" packages for lesser cars. That gives them the sales numbers to still produce true performance sports cars for those that can afford them. We don't want BMW to go the way Honda and Toyota did when they stopped producing any cars that were performance oriented and only went for the masses.
I would have loved a 128 or a 135 with the M package on it when I was younger knowing that the next step was an M3. I would have emphasized that it had the "M" package on it to emphasize sporty. They make great cars. Period. |

all you have to do is to pick out the 'real' m cars from the marketing 'm' cars....if they preserve the basic character of the m3 in the next iteration, as i suspect they will, it will be a great vehicle.

Thanks for all your feedback on this issue. I like to point out that I truly like my M3, however, I am truly disappointed for the future of this fine automobile as to where it is being taken. For example to plan to call the future coupe an M4 after all the championships the M3 has achieved I just don't get it.
Nevertheless, some interesting viewpoints on this issue indeed. Also I like to clarify that I will keep my M3 for quite sometime, after all I sold my e46 so to get into the last V8 M3. In my OP I merely pointed out that it will be my last one. Some of the posters pointed to Mercedes and the AMG line. I happen to own a C350 4MATIC it came with the AMG wheels. This does NOT mean that Mercedes plasters the AMG badge on the back of the car. Nope. The AMG package is cosmetic only. It adds larger AMG rims and tires, a skirt and bumper package, and some other trim but it does not involve any modifications to the engine or any changes to the handling ( other than the wheels with the more sticky rubber My C350 4MATIC is our DD and when I got it from the Dealer it came with the package.

A lot of great points on here. I thought I was the only one that didn't like the fact that BMW was "m" -ing everything. People buy the M3 because it is an M3 and it is significantly different from the 328 and the 335. I have come across a few people that were like, "I drive a M3," when they acutally drive the 335is or 335i. I feel like BMW is devaluing the M3. The difference between the M cars and non M cars is starting to close in.

And then keep your beloved E92 m3. Don't express your OCD thoughts here. For pure driving pleasure nothing comes close to a stripped-out racing ready M car say E30, if some of you will agree. HOWEVER, the way you want to live with your car everyday is what matters the most. And I'm afraid many here would have to nod their heads. Unfortunately not all of us can afford a track car. And for now I really think BMW has managed it well.

Take the car for what it is. If the next gen comes out and turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread, how foolish would it be to ignore it because it no longer carries the M3 sticker on the trunk. So you are saying it's OK for AMG to offer cosmetic changes only and slap AMG badges all over the car, but not OK for ///M to do the same thing? That's what it sounds like to me. I don't understand how people think like this? How about you wait until the car comes out first?

not your last! why not pick up an e30 now. should make a nice set
i think you shouldn't be too hung up on this though. life is about change. give the M4 a test drive. you might like it. i drove 991 C2S a few times now and own a 997. before i was no way i would buy a 911 with an electric steering and sound tube. well 991 kicks butt! love it! not sure i would want to part with my 997 as it is now even more of a classic. but i have my eye on 991 turbo. maybe slightly used

The New M3/M4 will own the yard once again. Everyone will rave about how great the turbo 6 runs once they get their hands on it.
