4 hours of driving for one grand seems like a good deal.

Check out kasselmotorsports.com in Puyallup. They do good work and are very reasonable.

4 hours round trip?

That AR estimate is missing the cost of the motor mounts (labor is mentioned, but not the part cost) and is 2 quarts shy of 10w60. Probably closer to $2800/$2900 out the door. Then add fuel costs and hotel room/meals out, and there probably isn't much to gain?

I got my car back today from the guys at Group2 Motorsports following rod bearing replacement - really happy with the level of service they provided me, the time spent answering all my questions, and also fulfilling a few minor alterations to the job.

2009 M3 - 63K miles
BE rod bearings + BE/ARP bolts, OEM motor mounts

My bearings weren't that bad. There were signs of wear beginning to show, but there weren't nearly as bad as some I've seen on this forum. 1 of my motor mounts was cracked/bad shape, the other was decent. Car certainly seems smoother, same thing Andrew noted (the other guy who had bearings done this week at G2) as well.

Only had the car back for 30 miles or so, but so far so good. Would definitely recommend Group2.

Good to know. I'm a couple miles from them and need some work at some point. Their labor rate is crazy high though.

It doesn't matter to me where you go for work on your car, it's your time and $, but G2's labor rate for bearings was lower than most shops in the area that I called. For other work...I couldn't say. They're hourly rate was on the higher side compared to other shops I called, but those other shops also quoted me a flat rate for bearings that ended up several hundred dollars higher than G2. And some of them had little to no experience with S65 rod bearing replacements.

Maybe you call those other shops and get a different quote than me...just telling you what I experienced. Again, it makes no difference to me, I don't work for any of these places.

did you get your BE bearings thru them or was it sourced on your own?

I told them what parts I wanted and they took care of everything.

I saw the new parts in person prior to install when I dropped the car off.

At this point, I'm leaning towards going with G2 as well. I reached out to Kassel Motorsports in Puyallup (easier for me since I live on the south end) but they basically stop responding after my phone call. I also reached out to Chris @ Prova. He admittedly hasn't done this work on the S65 but my conversations with him lead me to believe he's well qualified and equipped to do the task. His labor rate comes at about the same as G2 so I might as well go w/ the experience.

And yea, you guys are right. The 4 hour (ish) round trip drive to PDX area + hotel room and gas doesn't justify the slight savings by going all the way to AR Auto Service.

I was just making a general statement. They are 2 miles from me and if I need work, that's probably where I'll go. Regardless, $125hr is a lot.

Just got the car back from Group 2. Car feels great, much smoother (could be from the shitty front tires being changed). Very fast turn around, about a day and a half. Here are what my old bearings look like:

I'm broke now but it was worth it. The car had just under 80k miles.

Took my E92 M3 to Ian at I.S. Garage down in Kent on Tuesday 2/28 and got it back on Friday 3/3. Replaced original rod bearings with BE Bearings/ARP bolts and bimmerworld group n replica motor mounts. Very happy with level of service from Ian and the overall cost.

I sourced all parts myself except for the replacement oil pan bolts. Total came to $1,516.

Labor: 13.80 hrs @ $95.00/hr = $1,311
Oil pan bolts: $68.88
Disposal fee: $5
Taxes: $131

For parts I sourced:
BE bearings & bolts: $795 (they had a 10% off thread on this forum back at the beginning of the year)
Bimmerworld motor mounts: ~$200
Oil change kit and oil pan gasket from online: ~$200

So all in it was around $2700

^ Very fair price IMO. He quoted me quite a bit more for labor than what you paid, thats why I said in a previous post it's best for people interested in this work to call a shop themselves as the price seems to change with certain shops from one person to the next. And of course get a quote in writing.

Either way, the 2K figure that seems to get tossed around for RB replacement...I don't know any shops in Seattle that are doing it for that. Not after oil, filter, hardware, disposal fees, tax, etc. - it's closer to 3K or more than 2K.

BTW, what were the miles on your car and condition of OEM bearings?

2008 E92 with 63,2XX miles. Owned the car since 2012 and is my daily driver and has never tracked under my ownership. Got it at 30,000 miles and I was told that it has always been a Seattle car.

Bearings were well worn. I'd say in the middle range of wear from the photos I've seen on this forum. Most of the bearings were worn past the first layer in the middle section. Had a few bearings with some streaking as well.

Once I can figure out how to upload pictures I'll post some up.

Will also post up the blackstone oil analysis report when I get it back. My first report last year showed high levels of lead which led to my decision to preemptively replace the bearings. I'd much rather pay $2700 today and have my car last another 60k miles than pay $10k+ in the future for a rebuilt motor.

I was wondering if people were using the Blackstone analysis to determine if they needed this service or not. Thanks for sharing.

Message me if interested. I work at a pretty reputable shop in the seattle area.
Tried to PM you about another job (not rod bearings) but this is what I received: Ndc2991 has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.
