Computer says 8 mpg?!?!

Had my TA's replaced and replaced valve cover gaskets too. Tech called and said.computer indicates car is getting 8 mpg when driven now.
I always get 13mpg city..

Will it reset as i continue to drive it?
O2 sensors.maybe?

Curious...

Sounds like that tech is having some serious fun with your car! Next he is gonna tell you the rear tires are bald; common side effect of TA replacement...

My tire guy always goes on an extended test drive to "check the tire balance" lol. I never have to sit in a waiting room and he cut me a deal every time I come in, so fine by me. He drives a super clean e39 M5.

Regarding MPG - have you reset the calculator in the gauge cluster? Also could be bad gas?

Lol.
Well....
That would be better than throwing money at car trying to figure out the issue (o2 sensors, plugs, injectors, map sensor).. ..

Re calculator..he said he reset it.
Re gas...i use shell gas 90% of the time. Granted...i did have a mostly full tank if gas when i dropped the car off last week.

I asked him to use a code reader. Maybe a non critical code stored could ID an intermittent problem....aka a clue!

Did you notice if the time/date and trip odometer have been reset? Sounds like it could be a battery thing.

Car is still w my tech/mechanic...so i am going on his word in terms of the reset.

Hmm.. Now that i think about it re battery...in the last year the yellow battery light did come on 2x during initial startup...but disappeared (no issues otherwise). Definite warning signs that battery is on the way out (maybe regulator..maybe alternator ) for sure. Battery/alternator might be the issue....or fuel regulator/sensor....or all of em.

Spark plugs are ok as the bmw dealership put a new block in @ 22k miles (4.5 years) ago.
I dont think the o2 sensors were ever replaced though.

Wish i had a lift in the garage....

Well..if it were a fuel regulator/sensor...codes would have been thrown.

Forgot...i replaced the fuel transfer pump...before the TA's. Maybe i need to give the car time to recalculate. Maybe ECU needs to be reset

That is the fun meter! The lower it reads the more fun you have been having.
