Why is the e90/e92 generation the fattest?

Does anyone know why the e90/e92 is the fattest of them all?

Was there more interior sound deadening used, heavier suspension components, weight from 2 extra cylinders?
  • E90 M3 is ~3,700+ lbs
  • F80 M3 is ~3,560
  • G20 M3 is ~3,700-3,900? (not sure)
  • E46 and older obviously lighter

The G80 is heavier, ~3900 lbs.

The F80 got lots of new standard lightweight tech. CF Roof, CF Driveshaft (though eventually discontinued), CF Brake option. The engine weight was marginal, I think there is a ~10kg difference between the S55 and S65, though I believe that's dry and the S65 obviously holds more oil.

At the end of the day 150 lbs is the difference between having a passenger or not. It will also vary based on your spec (MT, Slicktop, no options will obviously be your lightest configuration).

If you check out Berns build thread you can see hes able to get an E92 6MT down into the 3200 lb range. Stripping the interior is aggressive, but the battery upgrade alone strips 50lbs.

Will start out by saying you have quoted the heaviest possible E9x and the lightest possible F8x. The weight savings on the F8x is a bit of an exaggeration by BMW marketing team. Similarly equipped E9x and F8x cars are very similar in weight. Most F8x cars are in the low 3600 lb range. If you need proof, C&D records weight:

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...mparison-test/
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...tested-review/

The G80 is by far the heaviest, around 3900 lbs. The weighed example had a near empty fuel tank, and still clocked in around the mid 3700s. Full tank would bring that up to ~3900 lbs. The F8x kept weight very similar to the E9x despite being much bigger through use of weight saving tech. The M3 got a CF roof (vs steel on E90), M4 got a CF trunk, they all got lighter seats (we've learned from retrofits), CF driveshaft and a LiOn battery. The base F8x wheels were also very light. E9x gained weight from the E46, partly from size and partly from no longer being made of paper mache.

You can actually apply a lot of the F8x weight saving tech to the E9x. Going to a LiOn battery alone will drop 45 lbs.

Why? Assumingly because the weight (save) is what BMW assumed target market at that point could afford. Always possible to squeeze a tad more weight out but at a cost.

Doesn't matter. I guarantee that 20 years from now people will still rave about the S65. I don't think most people will give 2 shits about turbo charged engines.

Beyond hybrids everyone's going turbo. For once Lexus decided not to follow BMW and still with a V8 for the IS-F.

AFAIK, F82 and E92 are nearly identical in weight. G80 is a boat.

E90 M3 is not ~3,700lbs. The commonly referred to figure BMW provided INCLUDED a 165lb (75kg) driver. Most moderately optioned E92s (DCT, NAV, CF roof) will weight around 3,550lbs. Car & Driver listed 3595lbs for their pretty healthy optioned, DCT E92. Car & Driver listed 3645lbs for a similarly optioned F82 M4.

Woah is this true? I love thinking my CF roof DCT may already be under 3600 before the weight savings I plan to do.
