Increased Emissions 2011 e93

Hi guys looking for some help, I just purchased an 2011 e93 and I just got the increased emissions dash warning. I take it to my mechanic to have him check it out and any other issues he can find and tells me it's harmless it doesn't affect the performance of the car. He suggest he pulls the exhaust which is a 12 hr job to inspect the ports for carbon build up. He doesn't know if this the cause but he says it's start. I dont want to pay for a 12 hr job just to start to look for my culprit. Any ideas... he services my x5 and 328i, has always seemed to have my back?

You're getting ripped off. Did he give you codes from obd2? I'd stop going to this shop. Increased emissions can mean anything. You need to run codes and see what is actually wrong. 12Hr job just to see if its the issue? lol.

Get the codes. Plenty of devices you can buy that don’t break the bank you can use to read the code(s) and that is the place to start.

Frankly anyone who recommends you pull the exhaust off for an emissions issue is not well trained.

First post, welcome to the forum. You actually need to post pics of your car before you are allowed to ask questions.

You are getting good advise above. Mine needs a new idle air control valve and it was occasionally giving the "increased emissions" announcement. A lot of things can give you in that announcement.

This was what mine needed last year, or a sensor. One of the two. Didn't affect performance or idle or anything. I had it replaced and one year/4K miles later nothing wrong.

12 hr job! Ha! I think it's time to find a new mechanic.

It could be a number of things... DTML pump, carbon canister, minor leak in the fuel breather hose, gas cap.. I would have to know the code # though

His advise is so bad that I feel like I’m being trolled when I read it. Even the most noob mechanic knows to pull codes first. Not gonna touch the ridiculous 12 hour estimate to remove the exhaust. Run from that shop. He’s not qualified to service your M3.

The advise I would give you would be to check the faults stored in the dme. As mentioned, the generic “increased emissions” fault you’re getting is coupled to dozens of potential culprits. AutoZone will pull your codes for free. Report back.

(HERE IS THE REPORT FROM INVOICE)
Found 2 codes:
27B1 Secondary Air System flow rate, bank 2
270D Power Management
Flow rate too low, this could be an air leak, restricted check valve and or plugged ports in the cylinder head.

Because I had to know... I pulled my exhaust, checked my ports, re installed my exhaust. All completed within three hours working with ramps, a floor jack to support the exhaust, and all while doing off of my back. Surely with a lift your guy can complete this task in a similar amount of time or less. Yea, way less.

I've never seen plugged ports in the S65 like the old V8's which were plagued with the issue. You've probably got a cracked air pipe or bad air valve.

What errors do the throttle actuators normally throw? Do they immediately go full crazy or do they start with increased emissions?

shazz...I cleared the code this morning wife drove it about 30 miles there and back and it didn’t come back. Normally I’ll start it up and it will pop in in the cold start mode. Doesn’t drive any different with code showing or not!z
