Another Bimmer in the stable

Traded in a soulless MB GLC300 for a 2019 X5 xDrive40i. The trade in value on the MB was down 8k from its peak this summer, but the price on the X5 was also back down to earth- so a fair trade. Setting aside the drive by wire steering, the X5 is so good.

Congrats! Another plus of a larger segment vehicle is better ride quality.

Hope you got a great deal on that 2WD X5. Around here we can't give those away and never ever have ordered one for stock. In general we find their used value is nearly $10k less than the same vehicle in xDrive. I don't think the books accurately depict the value of sDrive compared to xDrive in most parts of the country.

Not saying it won't make a great station-wagon and, until this year, I never owned any xDrive BMW. I like RWD.

ooops - it was the xDrive. sorry for the typo. I fixed it above. I like RWD too but the car fills a go-through-bad-weather niche for the family that's a little more challenging in the RWD e90.

You having trouble with the e92? I think I've garaged 5 modern BMWs and 2 BMW-made Mini Cooper's - not a drop off oil across the fleet.

DCT leak. I’ve had Subarus which are supposedly notorious for leaking in my garages for 20 years and not a single drop on my floors. M3 for 1 year and she bestows the gift of pentosin on me every time I move her.

About to have my nephew come over to put his e46 up on the quickjacks to check his oil pan gasket and valve cover for suspected leaks. I chalk it up to BMWs doing BMW things. We knew what we signed up for. But we thought people were exaggerating about how these cars like oil on the outside as much as inside.

Congratulations on the new car! Glad you’re back in a Bimmer! Unless I’m terribly mistaken the X5 still has mechanical steering. It’s just that its power assist is electric rather than hydraulic. Am I incorrect? If so, that’s a pretty big change that slipped by me.

You're possibly correct. It has optional in-lane steering correction which I suppose could be designed as an input into various hydraulic steering systems but I just assumed it was facilitated by whatever variant of drive by wire was in use 4 years ago. I can't seem to find an online resource other than a mention of optional rear wheel electromagnetic steering in the 2019. Definitely new to this model line so I wouldn't place a bet over it . The steering is fine for the application just not an asset.

Yeah, the steering rack is assisted electrically and therefore it can turn the wheels without driver input in order to make nanny corrections. But, there still is a physical linkage from the steering wheel to the steering rack.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Here's an article that describes the tech; I clearly made a jump from drive-by-wire and the system is use. Appreciate your matter-of-fact correction.

Also appreciate your grammar lesson graphic! A big one around my house is fewer versus less.

If I recall correctly Infiniti is the only one that uses “steering-by-wire” without the physical link from the wheel…

Sounds pretty sketchy to me, same with brakes.

It just boggles my mind how many supposedly fairly well educated people on this forum (and others) who are successful enough to afford a BMW misuse those two words. I can understand (fairly well) mistaking words that sound alike, but, if you pronounce them correctly, then and than don’t sound the same.

Yes, fewer versus less is also on my list. The one that I’m very guilty of is asking “can I” when I should be asking “may I”.

Congrats, that's a nice upgrade. Brown interiors are the best.

The steering is so luxury-tuned it feels drive-by-wire. It's pretty light and any weighting just feels artificial. No road feel or eagerness to turn. The X5 is a cruiser. Otherwise it's the best SUV in its class for the price IMO.
