Tyres from tirerack

Hi chaps,

I'm going to order some michelin super sports from tirerack. The shipping is 332.03. Some people are saying customs hit you with a fee or tax of some sort if you're import value is over $1000. Does anyone know what this is and what it will cost me?

Yes, if the value of the import exceeds A$1000, your tax will calculated inclusive of the freight charges too. So In your case, if the tyres are $1001, then the GST and import duty will be on $332.03.

I imported some tyres last year and made sure it was under $1000 just to avoid tax and charges. Ben at Tire Rack is good to deal with.

Pretty much what aussiem3 said but just to clarify the Duty and GST is only applicable if the goods themselves are over $1000, so not including the freight.
Also Duty is not payable on the Freight, only GST.

One other thing to take into account, if the goods are not delivered direct to your door there may be Freight Forwarder fees, so charges to the company who are holding your goods awaiting there collection.

If the goods are manufactured in USA there is no duty as AUSTFA applies, GST is calculated on the combined value of the goods and freight. (I bring in quite a few items from USA) There is also a customs assessment fee Last shipment I had from Tirerack was delivered straight to the shop where they were fitted.
Given the fees and charges you will still save about 1K on a set of M PSS.
I asked the local tyre dealer to see how he would go and couldn't come near the price
Tire rack use FedEx so you have good tracking.

Out of interest are any tyres manufactured in the US?
To ensure AUSTFA is applied does the sender identify the goods on the declaration or is it a given that customs will pick it up?
I'm assuming the additional fee is due to the 'paperwork' charge by customs & not the shipping company I.e. FEDEX as the door-door service shouldn't incur additional charges?
All being well I'll be looking to get some stuff from US so any costs saving initiatives appreciated ...

I think they must, there are certain brands of tyres Tire Rack will not export to AUS.
The extra fees appear as AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service) on every import I've ever brought in. As far as I am aware all the paperwork is electronically lodged and the tyres are cleared before they land here.
Fedex will give you a call to pay the duties before delivery

I ordered a set of 4 pss from tirerack just last week and they arrived a week later. To give you an idea of the cost...

$1700ish dollars for the tires including shipping, international bank transfer fees and exchange.

$200ish dollars for the customs duty.

$150ish dollars for the AQIS inspection (they need to check whether the tires are new, and don't have any dirt...)

All up it should cost you around $2000, still better than the min $2600+ you will be spending in Perth.

How much was your shipping? I was quoted 332 to Brisbane. Tyres are 938 for 245/40/18 and 265/40/18. 1367 aud

just ordered 4 235/45R-17 Continental ContiSportContact 3 XL for the E36 for $944.78 AU incl delivery and wire transfer fees.

with the e90 i generally order in batches as needed rather than replace all 4 at a time. bought 2 255/35ZR-19 Michelin Pilot Super Sport XL for 1,024.37 AU including delivery and wire transfer fees.

neither order picked up GST.

I had some 18" Michelin Pilot Super Sports delivered today to Brisbane. Here are the charges:

245/40/18: $426
265/40/18: $510
Shipping: $330.84

Total: $1,266.84

Wire through Commonwealth @ .8966 = $1,412.94
The exchange rate at the time was around 0.93. You can get better wire rates with some other services but cbf signing up to another financial institution.

Customs/GST charges: $279.58

Total: $1692.52

Does anyone know of these charges look right? Did I get screwed by the amount being 32c over $1000? And whats with two of the tyres originating in France?

Well provided you don't actually need 4 anyway, because the increased freight cost of two shipments of 2 tyres at a time can quickly eat up the tax saving.

Anything imported that is not manufactured in USA is subject to import duty of 5% in addition to the 10% GST Tyres manufactured in France (Michelin) are subject to a 5% import duty
There is no GST in freight BUT the DEEMED value of the freight is added to the currency adjusted purchase price of the goods to calculate the total value of the goods, once it tops $1000 - GST. Sometimes freight value can pull the cost over the line. Customs also keep a record of names so splitting shipments can end up in being taxed anyway.
In the end you are still better off bringing the tyres over even when you take fitting balancing and alignment into account

I got my set from TireRack.com about 9 months ago as, at the time, the tyre shops were quoting around $700 a corner which made importing a no brainer.

Now, I see that St George Tyres in Sydney are selling (2013 stamped) Michelin PSS in pairs for:

245/35R19 $700 (link)
265/35R19 $938 (link)
275/35R19 $850 (link)

With delivery for $90. So, 245's front and 275's rear makes it around $1640 for a set delivered. Add $100-ish for strip, fit and balance at your local.

I had never heard of AUSTFA, so if a product is made in the USA it doesn't attract GST regardless of cost?

Dave I didn't think everything was subject to import duty, only certain products? I once ordered a suit and shirts, both had different imports. 15 on the suit and 5% on the shirts due to different categories.

Can we just clarify that if you order an item worth $999 AUD, freight wont be calculated to form part of the total price and you won't pay GST on any of it. If it's over $1,000 the item will be subject to possibly import duty as well as GST which will be calculated on the total including freight.... do I have that right?
