I have had two recent encounters in the residential community in which I live and where I do my best to be a good neighbor, i.e., no aggressive driving. My wife and daughter are among the most polite and docile drivers on the road, yet my daughter has had to run a red light to get away from a man who angrily approached her BMW. Wifey has had to navigate to a police station in her Bimmer after a road-rager began tailgating her; regardless of her speed, obscenely gesticulating at her, and in general driving in an aggressive and threatening way.

I attribute much of these aberrant behaviors to the social and economic stress under which many live nowadays. The rest of it I just attribute to assholes.

You'd probably get more looks if your M's weren't DCT.
This just made my day and I don't even hate on the DCT guys, I'm just old school! Lmao

The world as a whole is probably getting harder as opposed to soft, but northern CA is the softest place on Earth.

Cool story. I live in San Jose as well. I've owned my M3 for over 4 years and nobody has ever said anything negative to me or has done anything to my car. The moral of the story is don't drive like an asshole and you'll be okay. Doesn't matter where you live.

Normally I'm too far ahead to see reactions.

Only one person I've noticed ever pull down the window to say anything.

A bro in a brand new Kia Optima Sport something with temp tags rolling back and forth next to me at the light.

I walked him at a little over half throttle in S5, but poor guy really tried. When we met at the next light he pulled down his window and goes, "Hah! I'd like to see you do that against THAT car!" *points to Carrera 4S front of me*

I escorted the PCar till it took the next exit...

Same driving in Camry as M3; much more reactions in M3. A good balance of nice car and some honking and headlight flashing. I honestly never stop to see if its good or bad...

Although one guy went out of his way to get beside me and flip me off...likely, he doesn't know I saw him bc I never once looked over and pretended I didn't even know he was there...eventually he went back the other way.

in urban California, M3 is just another BMW to most people and doesn't get noticed. In rural/suburban America, I can see the attention. But from my experience, that attention in rural areas are mostly positive and not negative.

I'm going to on the limb to say this regarding OP:

1. it's all in his head (as I posted before, how does he know they call him an asshole?)
2. or, he actually is driving like an asshole.

that's a really good de-escalation practice to follow. Kudos to you. Even if you did something intentionally, acting oblivious usually de-escalates the situation.

No disagreement is worth getting arrested or getting hurt over these days, especially if you have more to lose on your end. Always think, how would your current/future wife/employer view you when you tell them you're in county jail over a road rage incident? Sadly there's enough people out there who feel like they have an "honor" to keep for getting "disrespected".

To be clear, I will overtake cars that are going 30 in a 40, I do not wot as I pass but merely accelerate enough to make a safe lane change in which no one Im passing has to either brake or adjust their steering wheel. It is for this reason that I have had a few cars pull up to subsequent traffic lights with a comment regarding my driving, which is never reckless. How many speeding tickets do some of the haters on this thread have? I have 1 in my entire 19 years of driving.

I no longer live in California, rather Moscow on the Mississippi, but I came out to my car, parked in the Whole Foods parking lot, to find that someone had written "Materialistic Asshole" on my windshield in red lipstick.

An M3 is nothing special in these parts of the bay area, let alone an "old" E9x. Every luxury car, maybe about 25% of the cars on the road, are BMW/MBZ/Tesla/Porsche. How do I know? I've lived here for 30 years and I work/live in the area. Quit trying to turn this political. It's always "these damn liburals," for some fucking reason and never about personal responsibility. The simplest explanation and the most agreed upon is that OP was driving like an ass.

Doesn't matter where you live - drive like an ass - you get what you deserve.
No political BS. Red neck in a GT, pretentious CA prick, snotty yankee, etc...all the same.

Only time someone gave me the finger was a homeless guy tried to clean my windshield while I was a traffic light.

I simply wave no to him, wasn't trying to rude but I had no change with me. And who carry change with them nowadays? Smallest bill in Canada is $5 and I'm not paying $5 to anyone to clean my windshield.

If he was aggressive, the $5 you would pay would be for him to go away and not scratch up your windshield, vice an actual windshield wash.
