Top Gear "Review"

http://www.topgear.com/blogs/drives/079-bmw-m3/

"Well, if you've got time, there's a technical list long enough to make you break a considerable sweat just to get your head around some of it. But, for the moment, let's just say that the new M3 feels like the people who made it, created it for themselves. And they like to drive. Not helm, or pilot, or control. Not words that seem to indicate a lack of involvement; drive. And that makes it bloody good fun."

"The engine is the powerplant of the year, no question. And it's an engine that Ferrari would be proud to have made. A loud, razor-sharp unit that seems to rev for ever... and ever... and ever. Individual throttle butterflies that give the kind of response you usually only get in a racing car, coupled with that rev-range, mated to that noise which changes every incremental revolution - it's not a lump of metal, it's an event."

"It is brilliant, though. And that, for once, is not too strong a word. Roll on the TG Awards, I'm voting BMW."

I would concur with those words.

Steved, it appears that TopGear's review is more inline with your impressions than say AutoCar or CAR Mag?

I always like the writing in Top Gear, and this keeps me excited for the M3. As in some of Steved's posts, earnest comparisons are made with Ferrari engines, and that can't be a bad thing. No car can be all things to all people. It's no surprise that the new M3 has evolved in the direction that it has, and from what I've heard so far, I'm glad. This is to be my only car, and for $60K+ I don't want some raw twitchy car that is only at home on the track. I want something reasonably comfortable and safe that I can drive to work as well as drive fast and hard to Ferrari-esque sounds (on public roads all but exclusively) when the opportunity presents. I don't want a Lotus Exige (well, I do, but not as my only car...)

I have found that Top Gear usually takes pride in bashing BMW's. So, a review like this from Top Gear really puts a smile on my face.

Yes, that first comment was pretty lame. How's the weather on Quaylon?

Thumbs up

I love the comments about the engine relative to the likes of Ferrari, etc. Having driven a 360 Modena, that engine has been the realistic benchmark in the back of my mind ever since, along with the GT3 engine (although both cars are lighter, and they do it with 3.6 liters). I can't wait to experience this car!

this review is the most encouraging i've read so far. and the fact that it comes from traditionally bmw bashing top gear makes it even more so. now i'd like to hear bmw hater clarkson's comments on the new m3

Great. And we all drive E92 M3s - they are standard issue.

This review does bring the exitement level back. This sounds prude but my biggest concern is the mileage. I thought it was suppose to be 8% or something better than the e46. BMW keeps bragging about it's new efficient dynamics. It reality it sounds like it is much worse, dare I say similar to the guzzling M5 with 80 less horses. Swamp, I know you are concerned about mileage as well?

I'm not real impressed with throwing big engines in cars that suck gas as something to warranty awards. The trend should be N54 type engines that are turbo/fi and smaller displacement that produce the same power and get better gas mileage.

By the time the new M3 is here, gas will be over $4 a gallon...a trend that will most likely continue upward with no real retreat in sight. Hence, why I got rid of my tanking navigator and got the wife a honda pilot. And, I won't own another V8 most likely personally.

I guess I really don't get the whole gas mileage issue.

I don't really care of the car approaches 0 miles per gallon. I mean, its a 70k car, whose basic function - transportation - is the same as cars costing as little 10k. If I am trying to save money, not buying a 70k luxury item is way, way further up on the priority list than buying a fuel efficient car.

Ditto that - gas mileage is not a factor here for my purposes with this car. I get 22 mpg in town with my DD 330i anyways. If the M3 was to be my primary transport, it might make a difference but I doubt it.

I think the Top Gear article is more in line with the cars actual capabilities but from what it sounds like the brakes are a bit weak although that has always been the M3's weakness. Don't expect this car to blow away the E46 M3 because it won't. All-in-all it sounds like a beast. We'll just have to wait and test drive it ourselves. If the E92 M3 doesn't tickle me silly then I'll just hold out for the CSL. Yeah baby!!!

The longest wait I've ever had, but sounds like it will be WORTH IT!!!!!

I've never read of any engine being compared so closely to a Ferrari engine. That's pretty incredible.
