I assume this is the new major police car since the Crown Vic is no longer being made?

Well, considering most Crown Vics used here have about 250HP, I think it will do the job.

It is a Pontiac G8 with Chevy sheet metal. The one to watch out for will be the new Ford based on the new Taurus @363hp. I believe the Dodge Charger model with the Hemi V-8 is pushing 362hp

So that's what it is....was "intrigued" by the RWD. Glad to see Chevy is back in the game--maybe this will be better than the new Taurus AWD police car which replaces the crown vic....

People tend to give too much credit to police vehicles. This particular model is based on the G8 and boasts a 355hp V8, but it is also weighed down by all of its extra police equipment. Therefore, one can expect it to perform slightly worse than the production model G8 GT with 361hp, which is already slightly slower than a standard 335i.

That said, all of this is moot because running from the police will only get you thrown in jail, or much worse.

They are actually considering using the new Taurus SHO as a Crown Vic replacement.

This isn't the same car as the G8.

The G8 is based on the Holden Commodore, this is based on the Holden Caprice, which is a slightly larger car.

As far as the power output goes, GM has two choices of 6.0L V8s they can drop in it. The L76 is the most likely choice because it's got displacement on demand, and makes 361Hp here in the States, but they can also use the LS2 which is rated at 400Hp if there's a need for it.
Of course, given that it's the same block you could drop any of the LSx engines in there pretty easily.

Lets just hope they don't give these guys the LSA from the CTS-V that's making 560Hp.

The problem I see with the Taurus is that it's either FWD or AWD. The police forces have never liked the FWD vehicles very well, and AWD would seem like additional complexity without a lot of additional functionality to me. Obviuosly it's going to help them in the winter states, and in plowing through medians and whatnot, but it's also going to hurt the fuel economy, and that's a concern for them with the tight economy and limited funding.

It will be interesting to see how these new cop cars stack up. The Chevy and the Ford are both significant steps up from the old Crown Vic in safety and performance. It's the durability that's the questionable part. The fleet garages can swap a transmission on a Crown Vic in a matter of a couple of hours because they've been doing it for 20 years, and they've also got all the parts on hand. I'm guessing Ford and GM will both be throwing parts inventory deals in with these cars when they're going to major Police departments to sweeten the deal.

Then there's also this Carbon Motors startup that's going to sell a purpose built Police vehicle using a BMW engine, but I'm sceptical that they'll make it more than a couple of years.

Yep, and these new cars will likely have HIDs, or projectors at the very least. Right now if you see a car with either one of those, you can be pretty certain it's not a cop.

We're loosing that advantage.

It did look similar to a G8 to me. That's what I thought it was at first; rebadged G8. It would only make sense. That was one of Pontiac's best cars!

Exactly what I was thinking! Hopefully no HID's.
