Canon Announces 200-400mm F4 IS with built in 1.4x TC

Quote:
Canon today announces the development of a telephoto zoom lens featuring an integrated focal length extender – the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x. The lens will be displayed for the first time during CP+, held in Yokohama, Japan.
Designed for Canon's leading range of EOS Digital SLR cameras, the new lens will be an ideal addition for sports and wildlife photographers, offering exceptional flexibility with a built-in 1.4x extender that creates an increased focal range of 280 – 560mm.

Perfect for photographers who require high performance, fast aperture and a flexible telephoto range, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4× will enable photographers to shoot a greater breadth of subjects using a single lens, delivering the best possible image quality at all focal lengths.

Developed as a new addition to Canon's acclaimed L-series of professional lenses, the new lens will offer an unsurpassed combination of versatility, first-class optical performance and an enhanced weather-proof construction. The model will be released as part of Canon's continued development of its EF lens line-up, offering enhanced performance and improved functions that cater for the needs of photographers from beginners through to professionals.

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x is scheduled for launch during 2011.

My guess is $2700 - $3000.

I hoping for $4000 to $6000, but most are betting on $9 to $10,000!!!

Notice also that they never say what it weigh. I bet it's going to be close to huge.

Still, I'm waiting. It'd be an incredible wildlife and motorsport lens.

The Nikon version (without the teleconverter option) is $6,999, so there is really no chance the Canon lens will be cheaper than that.....

so it has a permanent loss of one f-stop? awesome.
so shouldn't it cost less than if it were a real 200-400 f/4?

it's not a permanent loss...the TC can be disengaged.

It IS a real 200-400 f/4, which would set you back $7000 if you could find and buy a Nikon version. This one is also a 280-560 f/5.6. Given that it's a Canon super tele zoom and the yen has slammed the dollar for the last couple of years and there are supply shortages due to the earthquake and its aftermath, 10-grand wouldn't be really surprising.

Yeah, a 928mm equivalent at f5.6 (assuming 1.6x crop for Canon and a 1 stop loss in TC mode) might be handy.

I'm a Nikon guy, and I'd love to have the 200-400. It is just big bucks for a hobbyist...
