When I started DE I thought people who wore them looked silly. Like they wanted to look like real race car drivers. That's because when I started out I didn't know sh!t. Now that I've been around the track for a while and gone to pro races and such I'm starting to think it wouldn't be a bad idea to wear one.

I've just recently started wearing one to the track. In light of what happened to Paul Walker and the other fellow I don't want to burned to a crisp like that. To me safety is paramount. I have a 4 pt Schroth Pro Fit harness, HANS device, Sparco fire suit and a VAC E92 fire extinguisher in my weekend warrior M3. I don't feel it's an over kill to have all these things in my car. Man, I look real fast. Lol. Again, the operative word is "I only look fast.

I have before, but usually only because I'm driving another car that needs a suit (open wheel) and switch to a tin top for a session or two. I don't bust out the suit for the E92, but I wouldn't judge anyone for it.

The likelihood of a street car catching fire is much lower than a well-built racecar, which is less likely than a rigged-together racecar, but anything is possible.

If you were stuck out there, I'd want some FRC.
i watched a e30 run off into the dry grass 2 years ago...car stalled and he couldnt restart it...the hot exhaust set the grass on fire and the car burnt to the ground....by the time the fire crew got there the car was fully engulfed... scary....

Yes, I do actually own two race suits and my wife has one. We never wore them in HPDEs, only races.

LV PCA group that requires the race suits has some 'race' cars in it, but they are better behaved and less risky to run with than some HPDE open passing groups I've seen.

Remember, if you are wearing a race suit, don't forget the lovely scratchy nomex socks. Worst part of the weekend was putting those on. Yech...
speaking of the nomex socks...can you throw them in the washer machine at home???????

It's better to have and not need then need and not have. I have a fully caged track car that I used to race frequently (not an M3), occasionally I would take one of my other vehicles out for instructing at DE's. When I would, I would wear jeans and a long sleeve shirt with the justification that the risk is significantly decreased because I'm not in a competitive environment. While it is lower, it's not significant enough for me to assume risk. Majority of the ppl I encounter on track; DE, TT, or W2W; are competitive people and will continue to push their limit. I had a friend say to me one night in the paddock when we were sitting around telling lies, "I'd feel pretty silly if my car caught on fire and my suit was sitting in the trailer in the paddock." I've always worn my since then.

well put sir...that puts things in a different perspective

Suits are primarily for safety and secondly for comfort. If safety is important to you at the track, then wear a suit. Same reason we wear helmets. Silly or not, safety comes first.
