Which 2 would you pick: M2 + E92 M3 or R8 + Golf

I've always loved M cars for their "one size fits all". However went to a 991.1 GTS since M went turbo. New turbo's are better daily drivers w good tech, but lacking the special character of the M cars with unique motors.

While the 911 GTS was fantastic, I didnt like to DD drive it. I found myself not wanting to drive in the rain, parking a mile away from other cars, getting grumpy when the kids shoes were dirty, getting dirty looks from people who think I'm a douchebag for driving a P-car

Anyways, I'm going to a 2 car strategy now. 1 for a "DD" then a weekend "special" car that sounds awesome and N/A V8 or V10. I live in Nashville, where the roads are great and the weather is mild. I also work from home 3 days a week, so no traffic driving and 99% "pleasure" drives. This is key since I'm not sitting in rush hour in Chicago type roads / weather for car choices.

My neighbor picked up a brand new Hurracan. I hear it start up, and drive away daily. And it really got me itching for something "exotic" and special. And OHHH the sound of the V10 this isnt a jealously thing but I just want an exotic car!

Ok, so here's my choices on a $90k budget for 2 cars -

Choice A: Keep my 17 M2 manual then add an E92 M3

I really like the M2 as a DD. Manual w Dinan setup is a blast around town, just a fun well balanced manual rear drive bimmer. BUT it lacks any type of sounds or special feeling on backroads driving, or driving events. A bit to clinical like new M cars.

So I had a couple E9x M cars. LOVED the V8 and intake noise. Its intoxicating to me. And you can still pick up a decent low mileage 11 ZCP for around $35k. I love the E92 w Akra and Dinan intake.

Choice B: 14 R8 V8 or 11 R8 V10 then add 15 VW Golf

Start with the Golf. Its a $11k DD. 4 doors, german build quality. I get mileage reimbursement for work trips, so this car will cost next to nothing to own. Its to get around town when I dont drive the R8. Easy decision.

Why R8? I want a car that makes me drool when I see it, would like a super car / exotic , no tracking, comfy for daily driving duties, exotic sounds w exhaust, get to stair at the engine through the rear every time I walk up to it.... need I say more?

R8. Going to test drive a few again. V8 vs. V10. I had an S65 and S85. I have to admit I love the exotic sound of the V10. Bottom line is $80k gets me a 14 v8 with warranty, and newer tech. $80k get a 25k mile 2011 V10. I'll hold out for manual.

I had the 911, and as great as it was, never felt "special" for a 100k car (to me). The R8 looks and feels more like a supercar. No tracking just fun driving around town, and many club drives plus back road jaunts.

So... anybody own an R8 that they can report experiences? I would drive the R8 4 to 6 days a week. I would take it out for fun drives, put 4k miles a year on it. So not just a weekend car or collector.

Plus wifey has a Q7 for weekend family time.

The smart brain says Option A. But the emotional side says Option B R8 V10 for a true exotic car experience....

Which would you pick?

For $80-100k, I’d buy a 991.1TT and daily drive it. No interest in driving a 2015 Golf. I will probably keep my E90M3 when I buy the 991.1TT, but I’ll put snows on the Porsche and drive it year round.

I had the 991.1 GTS which I prefer to the 991.1TT (TT is more comfy not as sport as the GTS). 911 is a great car, but not special enough for a 2nd car and not the best fit for a single car. I'd rather have 2 M cars or the R8 to drive 6 days a week.

The Golf is for getting around town time to time (bad weather, etc).

Ha ha... love it. never thought of that... I'd have to get a garage lift then. I only have a 3 car garage, and the golf cart plus kids bikes takes up a full stall.

I could leave the VW parked outside and dont really care. Cant do that w the E92 M or R8.

I drive rain and snow in M3s, and one has 700 rwhp. The Porsche with AWD and snows will be great. No Golf for me. Don’t need a car that is too special to drive much of the time.

My understanding is that the 991.1 GTS used the old 3.8L N/A motor. Nowhere near the performance of a 991.2 GTS with turbo 3.0L or 991.1TT with turbo 3.8L.

If you want to stay high revving N/A, look at 991 GT3, or the Audi/Lambo, or if you are on a budget, the Ford GT350 and the E9xM3. I have the 6MT trans on my E90M3 but think the DCT is higher performing and better geared for the engine’s power curve.

I'm probably gonna get lynched for this but get the Golf GTI as your daily. It's practical as hell, 5 door, spacious, and fun to drive. Plus you won't mind treating a Golf like a beater, something you can't do with an M2/M3.

2nd car, go all out. I'd say get an R8 V10 over the R8 V8 cos the V8 really isn't much of an upgrade over an E92 M3.

My 2 cents.

I'm having a similar dilemma.

Currently in my E90M3, and I plan to drive it into the ground. It was always my dream car but I wound up being able to buy it earlier in my life than I had expected. It has 97k highway miles but is doing awesome as my daily. Will throw winter tires on it as well.

Second car, I'm trying to work out if I should go with a R8 V10/V10+, 911 Turbo, or Gallardo. I've actually never driven any of these, but I know I'll appreciate them.

My only fear, and its a valid one, is that I will make this new addition my daily drive and just get bored of driving the E90. It happened to me within a month of when I had my 330Ci and had just bought the M3.

Interested to see what OP winds up with.

I treat my E90M3 like a beater. You can buy them for $25k now (though I paid a lot more when I bought mine used 8 years ago). Drive cars you like. Don’t park them to preserve them for their next owner while you drive an economy car. Unless you really prefer driving an economy car.

What I'm seeking is the "thrill" only a N/A V8 or V10 can provide in sound and high revs over 8k RPM. The kind of rush that makes you giggle like you're a 5 year old, especially paired with the right exhaust. But needs to feel planted like a sports car. The current M lineup no longer has this. Even the 991.1 GTS didnt have the "epic" top end. While a 911 GT3 would, is out of my budget, and likely a bit harsh for non track work.

The S85/S65 motors were special to me (insert tear dripping icon here) for this reason. However they come at a price of maintenance (rod bearings, etc).

This is why I have zero interest in the M4 GTS or other turbo cars to fill this void.

BUT I also want a modern package for DD when needed. And the E92 doesnt cut it for an only car... Which leads me to my 2 car setup

I would drive the R8 frequently, thus my comment of "6 days a week".

Example: Today its raining. I need to drive downtown for a work meeting, taking an R8 is a chore - parking structures, rainy weather, door dings, etc. Tomorrow I need to pick somebody up from the airport for a couple work meetings. Not a good fit for the R8. Insert the GTI for these duties.

It would not be a garage queen in terms of mileage, or use. My neighbor has an 08 R8 with 3k miles on it!! I see it tucked in his garage... If I have a sweet ride I will find time to get out and drive it (2 hours to go get milk). My other neighbor has a brand new Hurracan that he parks outside and drives his kid to the bus stop - I respect that

Its handy to have a utility car to drive for the instances where I would prefer NOT to drive the R8. There are times I will hop in my wife's SUV from time to time even over the GTS for example, this is when I would hop in the GTI.

I hear ya. However I already know I want the V10 R8 for the epic high end motor plus seeing the V10 under the rear glass , which means my budget shrinks for the DD. And the R8 V8 paired with a E92 M3 doesnt make sense, both have similar motors.

But different characteristics... rear engined awd, and front engined rwd.

I think you should decide if you want the E9X V8 over the V10 and then either buy the Audi + Golf or I vote to supercharge the M3 + M2 daily.

The 2011 R8 v10 was pretty weak from what I've experienced. Prob equivalent to a FBO e92 in terms of acceleration. The new ones are really fast tho. The Audi is almost on par with its big brother Huracan.

Audi r8 v8 is slow tbh it's similar to a stage 1 golf r if not slower. I would do m2 and e92 m3. Best way is to test drive them all and make your own choice.

Golf plus e92.

Golf much better daily than M2.

E92 fbo is faster than an R8 v8 manual.

I would happily bet money the S85 in an M6 is way more reliable than any R8 or Gallardo.

The DI V8/10 used to have major carbon buildup issues. There is no fix for that.

I'd buy the S85 (friend has one in a 6MT M5 from 2009 and it's just incredible) with a valved exhaust and just pay the 2-3k to get the bearings changed

90k would not be enough to get into the r8 I would want and still be able to buy a DD. I have a close friend in San Jose selling his 2010 r8 v10 with a stasis extreme package. It was a $64k dealer installed option with supercharger. 700hp and under 30,000 miles. His is for sale now for $108k.

Assuming you are setting aside 20k for a DD I don't know where you are gonna find a r8 for 70k unless it's an 08 or high miles which I would not want.

I would want to get the r8 and golf if I was you but don't see the numbers adding up so I would do the m2 and put some money into the m3. Supercharger etc

There are a couple 14 R8 V8 in the $80's and 11 V10's in the $80's. Or I'll just push my budget up a bit to get something nicer.

Most people with $100k car budgets aren’t really on a super tight budget.
