DIY BMW OEM Carbon Fiber Clear Coat Repair

So... I purchased a OEM high-kick spoiler from a member with an E93 a while back and it was damaged.
The spoiler was an OEM E92 M3 high kick spoiler.
The clear coat had been chipped and cracked. I was told that it could be re-cleared/re-coated, so I thought to myself why not.

After taking it to several body shops and random "Carbon Fiber Repair" shops, they all quoted me ridiculous amounts of money for the small repair. The most ridiculous shop wanted to charge me $600!

Started to Google carbon repair tutorials and what not. Stumbled upon this one, where the guy repaired some cracked clear coat from his rear diffuser.

Following the same techniques, I was able to successfully repair my the rear spoiler.

Intial damage:

After sanding with 200 grit, then 400 grit, then 800 grit.

Applied a layer of the epoxy resin with a foam brush as demonstrated from the youtube video linked above.

24 hours later, after the resin has cured.

The end result, I leveled the clearcoat with 1000/2000 grit sandpaper and buffed it till it was shiny. Looks pretty damn good!
Can't even really tell it was damaged before!

So I hope these photos helped anyone whos trying to repair their own carbon fiber at home. Don't be afraid to do it, it was really easy and the results are awesome!

Thanks for sharing. I am sure this will give confidence to someone who needs to make a repair and is being quoted from another dimension to fix it.

Yes, diffuser is quite common to have cracks, the same method works for rock chips/rashes on splitters.

Anything for countertops will work, some have higher levels of UV resistance than others. Any kind of two-part liquid epoxy resin will work. The best is the kind for marine boats.

I am so impressed with your work.

Do you think I have a shot with this F15 front splitter? Damaged before installing so should be easier to work with...

Thanks!

You can repair it but since its quite a large area you will need to do a lot more sanding and prep work before you can apply the resin.
