The E9X is so much faster than the E46 it is not even funny. Undoubtedly **way** faster.

General comments:
People have some interesting fantasties about the E46. Unless someone else here has had both for years, tracked both in the same day in the same state of tune, etc etc they shouldn't be speaking about this.

E9X is around 6 seconds faster, 6MT to 6MT, at identical state of tune around a track. It is a huge difference. What's more important though is that the E9X is much more fun around that same track.

As far as weight, I was tired of reading stupid things on the interwebs and brought both my cars to stock, filled them up completely full and got them weighed. Exactly 100lb difference.

Wow really 6 seconds faster and only 100lb difference?

With the same tires, equivalent suspension, etc

From the multiple times I've disassembled the cars it seems like the components of the E9X are lighter than the E46. Door cards, suspension, seats, etc are way lighter.
So, if you were to strip both out, the E46 would lose more weight than the E92.

E92 at the price they are going for now you would be a fool to pay 16-22k for a 80k/100 e46 when you can get an e92 with simular miles for around 23-27k. Much more updated car and fun to drive on weekends. Also has a lit of creature comforts that your M5 would have.

You'll feel at home with the DCT. I'd suggest trying to test drive the manual. I've had both and used to be a manual die hard but have been a DCT convert for the last 6 years. It's a beauty matched to the S65. The manual gear box isn't anything to brag about in the e9x unless you just gotta row your own gears.

I find the 6-speed manual to be ropey and vague with long throws.

I have one of each

The DCT has the OEM GTS map and is incredibly fast and precise

The 6MT has the AutoSolutions SSK and Ultimate Clutch Pedal. It is massively engaging

And one day you will enjoy driving it. Get it all out of your system now and make sure you are getting the right vehicle. We all did it, you are not alone.

Exactly right. The DCT is computer tuned to the performance characteristics of the S65 engine and maximizes it. I have the Dinan DCT software in mine and it only makes it better.

Dunno, but I view the M5/M6 to be the perfect Autobahn burner with a Bürger at the helm. For a lithe, nimble country lane carver, I'll take the M3 every time.
