So....this happened
I was at the dealership today with the E93 M getting her oil changed and saw a strange sight while looking at the inventory of new F8X and F10 M's...A guy pulls up in what looks like a M235i with a sweet looking frozen gray wrap, rims, and other exterior mods. Then, I notice that he also has placed a aftermarket ///M badge on the back
He starts talking to the salesman, saying he is considering trading his M for a new F8X M...Now, at this point I begin to ask the guy questions about his M235 and he is trying to explain and defend to me that, "Yes - It's a M"... At that point I politely explained that the M4, M5, and M3 sitting in the showroom are M's and walked away...

And the very fact that he thought it was an M car is the exact reason that BMW puts an M badge on it. He is a testament to the fact that BMW's marketing division is hitting the nail on the head by putting M badges on everything.
Sad but true.

Seriously - the guy was going on and on about his M...and I believe there is a thread dedicated to people placing ///M badges on "non ///M" cars...
...and the salesman was agreeing with him because he obviously wanted to "up sale" to the F8X M... I was genuinely interested in the wrap - it was sharp... |

I ask the guy about his wrap, and he proceeds to talk excessively about how his car is a M...and felt the need to defend his fake badge. I also daily a VW Jetta TDi that has the same engine as an AUDI TDi - I don't make any claim it's an AUDI, nor do I intentionally put a Quattro badge on it... Insecure? I'm not the one putting fake badges on my car... |

So to sum it up:
The owner of a convertible M3 tells the owner of the faster M235i that his car isn't a "real" M car despite the fact that the M235i would walk all over the e93 around a track, weighs 500lbs less, and has better driving dynamics, turn in, etc. Nicely done. |

The 235 owner felt the need to defend his car (and his purchase) to me...not the other way around, and proceeded to explain all the extras that BMW installs to make it a M. If you fell you HAVE to explain your purchase to a stranger that is asking about the wrap on your car... |

Not really, because an e30 m3 is more of an M car than an e93 M3 is as well. I agree that a M235i isn't a real M car, I just find it humorous that the owner of a 4000lb convertible was making fun of the guy with the faster car.

Guys, I think OP has a point. The owner or driver of the supposedly M235 is trying to make everybody ther his 235 is really an M BMW by just getting an M and sticking it on the back. The wrapped car wasn't really an M just a 235, right? Just ask the guppy about basic suspension or engine or gear that is significantly on the Ms and not on the 235, or just leave the guy and make him talk more BS
