Warning: Shoddy Paintwork and Vinyl Wrapping
The purpose of this thread is to warn everyone about the danger of shoddy paint work and vinyl wrapping.
Many of you have seen the thread (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=819414) I made back in March about wrapping my friend's Jerez Black E92 in 3M's Satin White. Everything went well, no application issues at all. He got tired of it quick and we ended up peeling it off last night. Back story: My friend got his M3 last year and the dealership agreed to respray his front bumper due to multiple rock chips. The paint on all the other panels were perfectly fine when peeling off the vinyl but when we got to peeling the vinyl on the front bumper, some paint came off with it. I peeled off my matte blue wrap last week on my own M3 with factory paintwork and all the panels are fine. So everyone, be extra cautious if you're thinking about wrapping your car when you have had a panel resprayed. My friends: My M3 after peeling off wrap for comparison: |

That does suck! Does Vinyl leave a lot of glue or marks after removed though? Just curious.

It doesn't leave any residue at all (for 3M at least, not sure about the other brands). |

Deng. I've always wondered how the paint will handle peeling the vinyl.
FYI, the last two pics show a different plate then the other two. Not sure if it matters or not |

I've heard of this issue with the 3m clear bra applications. I was going to take my car to a shop to have that done and they said they would only apply it to the original factory paint. They would not apply it to a non-factory paint job (mine is the original so it was a non-issue). So, sounds like this could be a common problem with vinyl on re-painted surfaces.
Sorry. Don't you love Monday morning quarterbacks?

Never understood wrapping a 70k dollar bmw with a vinyl wrap? Everyone I have seen looks so fake and nothing like bmw matte paints. I don't know it just seems silly to even think about and here is another reason why. You slather vinyl on and take it off things are bound to happen.

Damn bro!!! Hope things work out for you! The dealer agreed to repaint my friends front bumper so everything is resolved. I primarily do it as a favor for my close friends. It's more of a hobby for me. |
