$250 for an OE BMW Coil?? WTH?

I would agree with this also, the Chinese coils are spotty. If you can get BOSCH or NGK there is no reason to save a few dollars and risk getting a faulty/bad coil that might potentially lead to problems in the future.

I only chimed in about the URO/Chinese coils because they are another option on the market. I haven't personally tried them but a part store in my area that sells them said they have had very few go back to them.

This is likely going to end up being a similar situation with that of the vanos solenoids on the e60 m5. I will buy a syvecs and run a different type of ignition coil before I pay $2000+ for oem.

S65/85 Coils are much more common than S85 vanos solenoids. They will come back in stock much like the vdo actuators. Plus, coil failures seem to be rare.

You cant say that for sure, if there is some sort of material used in these things which gets banned in manufacturing they wont reengineer a whole new part for such as old application.

I am confident there are no banned parts in these coils and that production will resume. Let’s check back in a year and see who is right.

Its really not a matter of who is right because right or wrong it wont really change much. Chances are even if they become available again prices wont go down because thats just how things work.

FWIW, I am in contact with another japanese vendor who produces similar ignition coils. I will make a thread in the future if they work in our application.

Eldor and Bosch made them for BMW. I have no experience using NGK coils, although NGK is a quality brand that supplies many OEM's.

NGK is used for the spark plugs.

But never have I used them for coil packs. Until now. Rock auto had 8 left, and I couldn’t resist at $76 each..

I’ll report back if I have a problem. But I don’t think I’ll be installing them until I sniff a misfire, or check engine.

these coils change part numbers all the time, get "upgraded" etc. it was confusing as hell when i did the coils on my other two bimmers. i mean, i love a good auto forum freakout as much as the next guy, but are we sure they aren't just swapping part numbers or something? I still see prices for around $75 for an "oem" ignition coil.

Don’t downfall with getting these.

If your one that’s just looking to have an extra set, your paying $150 each. But if you plan to do the job right away. You just got Genuine Bmw coils for $80 bucks. The price of NGK on rock auto.

WOW, I found OE coil for $77.99 each parts #12137841754 exact same ones that are being sold by ECS tuning and FCP euro, No core charge... Just installed and car is running new... I bought All X8 and change my spark plugs through my FCP warranty, I paid for everything under $700.00 because I had to overnight parts as needed. Error code are gone and no more misfires. The place that I order is AutohausAZ.com just google them...they are a whole saler for all Germain parts. order while supplies are in stock.

What year is your car and how many miles? I have been on this forum for about 10 years and rarely read of coil problems. Plugs, yes. If you changed your plugs at the same time as the coils, you can’t be sure whether the misfires were due to opened up plug gaps or the coils.

In contrast, the 135/335/535 often kill coils in 5-10 years (I have had an 08 535xi for 9 years and replaced its coils with S55 coils a few years ago due to misfires).

The misfires could have been solely the plugs that were faulty. (When I had severe misfires. I changed the plugs, and all was well)

I have 173k miles on my original coil packs, and O2 sensors.

Though. I was one of the people who purchased coil packs due to the prices sky rocketing. ( I got the NGKs for $76 each from rock auto) I just received them in the mail. And they indeed DO have the bmw engraved / stamped on them.

Your that confident my 173k mile coils won’t have to be replaced?

Going to be hard to find them again under $100 if I ever need to replace them.

I could be wrong though.

Eventually everything needs to be replaced. I don’t usually stockpile parts, though I did buy a new clutch kit for $100 and a new flywheel for $100 even though I do t expect to need them soon because those prices were too good to pass up.
