Good night, sweet prince.

What a shame that an engine this magnificent has been put out to pasture.

I'm sure it will be the best engine ever that I can say I owned. I understand the direction BMW has taken but I don't agree with it. If only we had the lighter F8x with the 22 lb heavier S65 or a similar high reving V8. The net of 150 lbs less weight and an advanced chassis would be nice but everyone had to have their torque and BMW decided to go half assed green.

22 lbs weight savings, 5 mpg improvement, slightly better smog, and higher torque aren't good enough to me when comparing S55 to S65.

Good night? It's not like my car is going to suddenly disappear the moment the F80/82 start hitting BMW dealer lots.

Can't help thinking there was more development left in the S65. Efficiency, power and we know displacement already. At least one more generation before turbocharging would have been perfect. I'm really broken up about it. I've had turbo cars before. There is a long list of issues long term. That's for another thread though.

If 8400 rpm is what does it for you, I get it - but are you sure the "loss" of 700 rpm at the top end more than offsets the gain in power, torque and mileage?

I admit that sound may be an issue, as everyone loves the noises the 4-liter V8 makes. As for me, I loved the trademark sonorous snarl from the E36 3-liter that graced our garage, but really didn't like the noises the E46 made - except for when it was fast-idling after cold startup.

Oh well. Here's hoping the new one will make that trademark snarl.

Great video, unadulterated by any soundtrack other than the glorious S65.

Did you snag this from my OPPO post?

So, the new engine makes peak power at 5500 RPM. You can rev it out past 7000, but the engine won't really be encouraging you to, like the S65 does. It really will be a whole different experience. Not necessarily bad, but a lot different. I'm interested to start hearing the reviews.

I feel very blessed I was even able to experience this engine (along with everything else e92 M3), let alone own one! I just hope that I remain in a position to own her past warranty. I'd really love nothing more than to be able to keep her forever!

Yes just a little because my e46 serves its purpose better. I can always buy another e90 if I desire!

That's why I refer to the redline. The proper shift point for the S55 will likely be 6000 and that is an enormous difference from the S65 coaxing you to tickle peak power at the top. The new M is for those who crave more speed for excitement but I crave for the drive to be exciting. Besides, the E9x M is already too fast for the street.

Ah, but you are not the BMW marketing department trying to sell the car to everyone with ~$75+ k to burn on a new car in 2014. Not to mention it looks REALLY good to people from outside the BMW family to see the improvements in HP, TQ, and MPG from a previous model as these types of people (I am generalizing here) would not really care about the differences in engine characteristics (redline, feel, etc) between the models. I would argue that it's much more of a black-and-white argument for most.

For those of us fortunate to have experienced the s65, however, there is a whole lot of grey in the debate of changing model years...and I'll be damned if I give up my V8 just yet!

Meh.
The new boosted mill will respond much more eagerly to tuning and mods than the already milked v8, be smaller, lighter, and already torquier.
It hits peak power at 5500 based on the tune. That could easily be shifted to the right, at at least held to redline with mild adjustment to wgdc, and a slight massaging of the ignition curve.
I doubt they're milking these turbos for all they're worth.
The first time one of you v8 guys gets pulled by one it'll be off to the dealer for you, I'm sure.

There is no doubt it will pull on the E9x and maybe even annihilate it but for cars that are already in this power level, that's not what I care about.

that makes no sense though.

when you shift, depending on gearing, the rpms will drop between 2500-3500 RPM. so why would you NOT rev to redline? because if you do, when you shift, you will be at a higher RPM making more HP as the car makes more power at 4500 RPM than it does at 3000 RPM.

shifting at 6000 doesn't make any sense based on the power curve we have seen.

Wished they incorporated direct injection to the S65. 10% increase in power and fuel economy without turbo.

Depends on the car / gearing and how fast or slow you shift

+1. Just because you don't feel the surge of torque in the upper RPM's doesn't mean you don't need to shift at/near redline for the fastest acceleration. It's just not as exciting as the S65.

That's why I said "likely". We don't know the gearing yet.
