Had the same issue, did a search on Ebay, found this for $5, bought and it worked perfectly. Like buying a whole new badge.

Just bought one. Any tips on application or removing the old sticker? Or did you just apply over the old one?

Here is another option (that's if the E36 sticker fits the E9X badge):

I bought this one a few months back. I took the old one off using small plastic putty knife, simple green and clean rag. It took some time to get all the residue off but it is on well and shows no signs of fading yet.

I’m looking for a new decal/sticker to replace my e90 M3 faded one. Do the older model stickers fit or do they need to be cut to fit?

All you need to do is buy a new emblem. Add PPF layer on top of the stripes and it will never fade, and if you polish the trunk it won't burn up the emblem if you don't do the prep-work.
