Just changed out front pads. Should I be concerned?

Hey all,

I just changed out my front pads. I noticed the inner portion of my rotor isn’t wearing. Should I be concerned or is this normal for new pads?

you probably used the wrong pads. that clearly defined line isn't a misaligned caliper or something... i'm guessing that pad isn't the correct diameter. something is wrong and that is enough that it needs to be addressed.

Did you install rear pads on the front? Maybe?

Yeah, check runout on the rotors. Either they are really uneven and out of spec (and they need to be turned or replaced), or there is something very wrong with the pad or caliper, or how it was installed. Did you lube the areas of the pad carrier assemply where the pad slides?

odd. usually when a pad that is not making correct contact, the rust line is more faded. this is so abrupt, i would have thought there was zero contact, or something is blocking it from full contact.

The other wheel is more faded. This side is worse. I'm taking it to a trusted guy tomorrow. This was basically my first attempt at doing pads with the intention of learning and saving a few bucks.

I would go do 10 80-10 mph stops with engaging abs, drive around 15 min without coming to complete stop
Get out, see what you got

Or do as many 80-10 stop till you experience the green fade stage then drive around

Unless something else is broken, that's normal taper (thinner towards the inside closer to the hub, thicker outside after years of use) on the rotor coming up against a new flat pad. It'll go away eventually but you'll have 30% less pad touching the rotor on both sides of both rotors until the pads wear a bit, and at the rate pads wear on these cars in street use, that will take a while. So yeah, it's not normal, and shouldn't be that way, but it's certainly predictable if you don't have the rotors turned and/or get new. Did you measure the thickness of the rotors at their thinnest point to see if they're even still above minimum thickness?
