Who is Michael Cooper? M3 driver in CTS-V Challenge!

EDIT:

Michael Cooper is member "the///Mthree" on M3post and has shared his experience from the race starting here:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...07#post6122007

As the title says, I'm looking for more info on a chap named Michael Cooper. He recently entered an E90 M3 in GM's CTS-V challenge and defeated CTS-V loudmouth Bob Lutz. I just figured it was good info for the M3 community because this kid was only beaten by a track veteran in a CTS-V and also by John Heinricy. Lap times around the Monticello Raceway were:

Michael Cooper - E90 M3 - 2:50:424
Bob Lutz - CTS-V - 2:56:321
Aaron Link(vet) - CTS-V - 2:48:902
John Heinricy - CTS-V - 2:46:560

Cooper shocked a lot of people today and GM was forced to bring out the big dog drivers to maintain the integrity of the CTS-V at their own challenge. So...... does anyone know who this particular Michael Cooper is and also, could he be a member on this site?

Also it was posted in M3 general instead of M3 vs... because this area of the site gets way more traffic.

****Edit*** Just found the other thread which has left "CTS-V challenge" our of the title. Sorry for repost!!

Yep, and that's why he was spotted 140hp and 250 ft-lbs of torque.

It is a repost, and normally I'd say its time for a thread merge but maybe Michael deserves his own thread. Mods will make the call.

Yeah, and he was carrying 600-700 extra lbs.

ROFLCOPTER. Just like I said: A competently driven M3 can put up a fight against the CTS-V. GM had to drag out John Heinricy, a man who's been competitively racing cars probably since I was in grade school, to win.

That's nothing but an embarrassment for GM.

God, seriously - the more I think about this the more I laugh. GM talked all that smack and then some kid off the street puts the wood to their uber sedan.

Nice work! I was getting sick of the whole cocky "CTS-V pwns all in the class" attitude.

I am sure there will be similar results in the "forum wars" track competition.

i would not be very proud if I was Micheal Cooper at this point in time.To be beaten by a heavy slug of a CTS-V on a road course by 2.3% on a road course where a chicane was added to slow the CTS down on the straight is a joke.John H is quick but not unbeatable but put a real driver in the M3 and see what happens.
Lutz acheived what he wanted,to bring a pile of attention to the Cadilac brand.Good job Bob!

I don't think I'd be bragging about beating a 78 year-old, even if he was driving an Enzo. I don't care how "spry" you are at that age. Hand-eye coordination and reaction time deteriorate significantly and progressively with age.

He didn't just beat Lutz. The M3 guy beat everybody except for GM's most seasoned professional development driver. And it's an embarrassment for GM because they arrogantly issued their challenge without ever considering the fact their car would lose.

They didn't lose. Sounds like Mr. Cooper has a little experience himself.

The bigger question is "if the M3 was being driven by an actual professional race car driver, had it beaten the CTS-V?" Considering the M3 was only 4 seconds off the CTS-V's veteran race car driver's lap, yes it is very likely.

4 seconds is an eternity in real racing even in a 170 second lap!

If you read the article, there's more to the story.

Of the actual contests

1. BMW M3 sedan by Michael Cooper 2:50.424
2. CTS-V driven by Jack Baruth of "The Truth About Cars" 2:51.153
3. CTS-V driven by Lawrence Ulrich, a freelance journalist 2:53.157
4. CTS-V driven by Bob Lutz 2:56.321
5. BMW M5 3:05.398
6. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo MR Touring 3:08.126
7. CTS-V 3:14.292
8. Jaguar XF Supercharged 3:15.670
9. Audi RS4 3:15.670

The difference between first and last is over 25 seconds.

Props to Michael Cooper

The big issue was with this was it had to be your own titled vehicle and you could not have any mods or have raced the car competitively before. Cooper beat out a lot of cars, including an ///M5. So he is an extremely competent driver. The CTS-V has had tons of testing at Monticello and they have a lot of track time there, they also beat Bill Auberlin in an ///M5 last year there.

I would have loved to see some of the BMW Motorsport guys namely Martin Birkmann take his E90 there and kick some serious tail but the other stipulation was that you could not be an employee of the challenge car manufacturer, nice how GM gets to make the rules and still get some publicity.
