Solid state hard drive?

I am configuring a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Tablet and am debating between a traditional HD v solid state.

I am a physician and am converting to an electronic medical record (EMR) and will only use the device for patient care in the office. I have a multitude of other machines for other uses. I am thinking that the speed of the SSD will please me. I am not the least concerned about capacity because I am not going to really store anything on this computer.

Besides price, any other drawbacks to an SSD?

Price is probably your biggest concern but if you can cover the cost of one, I'd say go for it. It can only help your productivity. But at the same time, I don't know how big the records can get (I'm thinking not so big) so a regular HDD would still work for you.

Thanks. I am using a web hosted solution (saas) application. All I need is a browser and high speed Internet connection

Most of the latest gen SSD's using the SandForce controller are having Blue screen issues in after market applications.

The Samsung SSD's seem to be ok, but this is for 2 reasons. First off, they use their own unique controller to Samsung. Secondly, they are only available right now to OEM manufacturers. Which may be your case.

Now, while the BSOD is an issue. I don't tihnk it is happening often. Only occasionally. So, not sure if it is enough to scare you off. But for your purposes, an SSD is really kind of useless.

I would advise against using a SSD for this purpose.

Although you can and if you do you should definitely use a secondary back up with either HDD or better yet a Tape drive.

SSDs used to have a longevity problem but that has been overcome, although once it eventually and inevitably fails its very difficult/impossible to do a full recovery unlike HDDs.

This isnt a problem for most users but in a professional environment tape is the standard for backups and SSDs are NEVER used as a sole source of storage in IT.

The reasons for SSDs are usually only for high performance machines, such as gaming and graphics design or servers with high disk load which all require fast CPUs to go with it or else disk speed is never the issue.

You might also be interested in data encryption, I know doctors use hand writing for this on paper and the digital equivilant would be a program called TrueCrypt which you might be interested in, its free and practically full proof.

SSD's are great for anything because of their speed and instant access time. It doesnt matter if its a laptop, a desktop or a server, it doesnt matter how much ram or how fast your CPU is, SSD outperforms HDD every single time by ten fold.

Try opening 10 PDF files with HDD and then open same 10 PDF files with SSD, and you will see huge difference.

From my experience so far, i had great experience with Crucial brand.

And, battery life will be higher with SSD on your tablet, and if you drop the tablet, you dont have to worry about SSD failing.

As with any storage, HDD or SSD, you should always back up your data of your tablet.

Honestly, an SSD is overkill for just trying to do word processing. Or open PDFs.

Intel recently released their update that should solve the Blue Screening issue for their 320 line of SSDs.

If you work on one document a time, then yes SSD can be over kill. But, if you are multitasking and have many programs open at the same time, then SSD does a much better job.

Web pages, not all pages( Craigslist and a like do not count), load faster with SSD then they do with HHD. Open a FireFox/IE/Opera?etc with 6 tabs to 6 different webpages. Now close them, but do "Save and Quit". Now open web browser again, and watch how fast all 6 pages load with ssd.
