Love the car Ryan, just followed you on IG (screamer). Excited to see more progress with the cage.

The Core4 Motorsports hub upgrade with 14mm press-in studs and MCS 3-Way dampers are now on the car! The PFC kit is existing from the previous build stage.

This is an awesome build. Love following stuff like this especially because I'm at a similar stage, where I'm trying to plan this stuff out. Looking forward to more!

With the shutdown and trying to abide to ‘stay at home’ the progress has been slower than expected. Here are the latest pictures. I am very pleased with the cage design and craftsmanship thus far! Can’t wait to see it freshly painted... finally picked out a colour too!

I'm dropping the car off today to get a weld in roll bar made, since none of us can use our cars for what they're designed for anyways

Its a 2011 E92 M3.

The dilemma I'm having, is that I don't want to do a full cage right now. But, I also realize that I'm going to incur a sort of double cost because when it comes time to do the full cage, I'm more than likely going to have to scrap the roll bar to get the full cage done properly. Oh well, I guess.

That’s awesome!

Well, if it’s any encouragement, I had Fall-Line Motorsports build a weld in half cage. I drove it that way for two seasons and then went full cage. They actually salvaged the half cage and extended it. The gussets on ‘B pillar’ were larger, but it worked. Can’t say if it was counter productive or ideal? Here are a couple pictures I could find....

Mr Bone, are you sure? I thought the 12mm BW ones were 75ftlb. No idea what the 14mm BW ones require.

The stock lugs are 88ftlb IIRC

That's what I did them at. I just could not get myself to do 75 ft lbs on studs.....that just felt wrong......

Once the 14mm press-ins are installed, I think that may even be a bit higher than the 105.

I did 82ft lbs on all my 12mm studs on the E46 and E92. Far as I know I never had any issues here?

BimmerWorld does 74ft lbs for both 12mm and 14mm studs. Still undecided, but I plan to stick in that range 80s,90s.... I know there are recommendations as high as 115 ft lbs.

fwiw, 105 ft lbs on the front 14mm was problem free for me for a whole year that they were on the car.

Core4 has their own recommendations for the press-ins.

EDIT: Tom was talking about the technical aspects of why 14mm use higher torque, but I don't remember the reasons.....But, definitely ask him. He's happy to talk about that stuff.

If I remember correctly from Engineering, the correct torque for a fastener is the amount that creates a certain amount of stretch on the threads

We started using MSI around 2015 when things got so competitive in IMSA that a second or two on a pit stop meant the difference of several positions. The studs we use on our cars since then are specific to the exact car configuration (and axle) with another trick or two tossed in for the fastest possible pit stop - and we can buy them 100 at a time.

The studs we sell were designed back in 07 or 08, and we used them successfully for a decade with 1-2 broken studs the whole time, and all in endurance racing with hot pit stops and wheel guns. But we couldn't get the axle-specific studs we need for this level of racing (that have some features that club guys would NOT want) without ordering 1,000 at a time - that's more than we will use in the life of the car model - and we tweak the design occasionally when setup changes.

A production run machine shop is set up for high volume. We deal with one for a part we make that won't do less than 25,000 parts because of the machines they use and their configuration. But you can also set up a machine shop for shorter runs and more custom work. It's not a quality question, it's about what it takes to get the job done that you need. And specific to wheel studs - I can produce something top quality for a bit less money using a shop set up for volume - and even we can't afford to have them do our custom work.

Thank you for the clarification James

I've been using the BW race studs for years with great results and will continue to do so. Now I'm using the 14mm studs on my E90 after converting to the F80 hubs

Sweet cage! What did you end up painting it? Also, did you feel the IMSA bar was too close to the steering wheel? We are putting that bar in the same location.

No actually the IMSA bar is not in the way and reassuring I have that extra safety there!
The color I painted the cage/interior is a dark satin grey. Didn't want anything too bright or glossy for reflection purposes.

Interesting, what kind of studs are those.
They seem press fit
