I do track-days MDM on. Actually, I'm trying to be myself more intrusive than MDM, it allows quite a slides -- robbing tenths from my lap time.

Just wanted to get some clarification on traction control and MDM. My understanding is that when I turn the car on I have "full" traction control, by pressing the "M" button amongst the "Power" button and "EDC" turning on so does MDM. When MDM is on, it has reduced the regular traction control setting?

The power and EDC button have nothing to do with MDM. They are separate functions. You are correct that when you start the car stability control (which includes traction control) is fully enabled. When you go into MDM mode the stability and traction control is set to a 'half-way' mode where it allows more slip angle and more wheel spin before intervening.

He meant the M button is adjacent (using amongst) to the EDC and power button, not part of them.

In the UK here, so I guess my M3 has Euro MDM? What's the difference between that and the US's MDM?

I'm a track day novice (done just 5 so far), no way in hell am I turning it all off! At some point I my go for MDM.
Some people seem to forget that most of us don't want a large repair bill at the end of the day (even though I do get track insurance), nor the hassle or hurt! So why increase that risk for a little extra fun or speed??
Anyway, here in the UK we're not allowed to time our laps.

You can learn to avoid DSC kicking in, by e.g coming on the throttle a little later out of the corner so that light doesn't flash (as I did after frying the rear brakes at Snetterton , DSC light occasionally flashed coming out of some corners, but I wasn't feeling any slip, nor was it throttling back).

But I can tell you now, after driving on a greasy wet Brands Hatch, that even with it all on (remembering it's euro spec) you can still get the car quite sidewards! And that wasn't with large amounts of throttle either.
That very slippery track day (which a mate of mine in a 4WD Scooby agreed with!) certainly taught me more gentle throttle control, even though DSC was fully on.

Is their any detailed definition anywhere of how much less MDM intervenes vs full DSC?

Euro MDM is just slightly less intrusive than the US version.

I always left mine on too and thought that it wasn't doing anything because the light very rarely ever came on but man was I wrong. I was roaching front track pads constantly and could never get the car to feel alive. It was all MDM doing stuff in the background without flashing the light.

Turning DSC all the way off was a game changer. Pads last way longer, the car feels much more nimble and alive, etc.

I think MDM is awesome for getting started but I also think you should turn it off after getting comfortable. I can see it teaching bad habits.

Very interesting take. I wasn't aware MDM was that intrusive (I too generally felt a difference only when I saw the light on the dash).

I generally run with DSC fully off, but I make exceptions for tracks I'm not overly familiar with, have slightly wet conditions, etc. I'm not pushing 100% when using it given the circumstances, which may explain my lack of awareness to MDM working to the extent it does.

this may be a dumb question, but DSC off still keeps the ABS on, right? it's just the smarter stuff that gets shut off? or are you completely on your own?

I don't think you can turn ABS off without causing a fault in the system like removing a sensor or fuse.

100% agree! I only have 15 track days but I turned DSC off around day 10. I had euro mdm running but I noticed it doing some weird/unexpected stuff in turn 11 on Jefferson Circuit (Summit Point, WV) when I was starting to learn to get some good slip. It's a left turn where you brake straight downhill going from ~100mph to ~60mph and then turn in. Just after apex, my front right was consistently doing this weird dip. Almost like MDM was slightly applying the brakes to the front right. I turned DSC off and it went away. Accidentally left it on the next session and it did it again; turned DSC off and it went away again.

Correct. You'd need to pull the fuse to disable ABS. Or some kind of fault in the module, failed wheel speed sensor, etc.

MDM is very intrusive, even in the Euro mode. The amount of brake application it does is crazy. Small amounts, but all the time during corning. Dogbone did a good write-up in his thread a while back. Showed the amount of brake pressure it was putting on each wheel throughout a corner and it was surprising, to say the least.

With that said, MDM is still much better than DSC fully on.

The biggest problem with DSC full on is how early and aggressively it cuts power on corner exit. Definitely MDM at the minimum for track use.

I run MDM any time the conditions are lousy or I have a passenger so I drive well within the limits. With slicks, it's still very usable and quick.

On my last event of the year, the wheel bolts failed and I lost a wheel. An odd thing that happened is that I had essentially no braking for several seconds as if the DSC took over and applied it where it thought was most important. After several seconds, it braked normally.

It is an odd scenario for DSC to work with where one wheel is showing 0 speed with minimal brake pressure applied and the others are a much different and higher speed. Wonder how it would have braked with DSC off, but I'd rather not find out.
