Which current Porsche is closest to E90 M3?

Going to Porsche Experience Center again and so far have driven the Boxster and Cayman S. Was wondering which Porsche is closets to driving our M3's in terms of feel/driving dynamics? I am thinking of using the Panamera (front engine, rear wheel drive) this next time out ....thoughts?

Is this bait? LOL Really, none of them. I guess the Panamera is most similar in size, weight, and powertrain configuration, but it's gonna feel way bigger than the E92.

Why not drive the 911, which is a legendary sports car? All of the journalists used to compare the E92 to the 911.

Thanks for the feedback, not bait!

I am working my way up the food chain and saving 911 for last. Would love to do this sort of thing in an e9x M3. I am 15 mins away from the Porsche Center so it is very low effort for me to get out there. I like the Porsche Experience Center because of the nice exercises/courses they have and also you get an instructor in the car.

Was debating between 911 and Panamera fro this time out but was leaning towards Panamera since it seems like it would give me more of an M3 feel.

Even the lightest Panamera is like 4,000 pounds.

Are you driving these just for fun, or because you're considering buying one? If the former, go for something ridiculous like a Turbo or GT. If the latter, choose something that you would legitimately be able to afford.

Just for fun and learn how to drive better at high speeds and also car control. My favorite exercise is their low speed polished concrete drift course for car control practice. Not looking to buy.

Interesting post...following. Was having a recent conversation with a guy who traded his 911 GT3 for an F80. He recommend doing exactly what the OP is doing, staring out small and working your way up to a 911.

Fun to think about but I will likely never part with my E92.

I'm not entirely sure that driving MR/RR cars is the ideal way to do that. They handle very differently from an FR setup like the M3. As I'm sure you noticed, the rotation of an MR car and the moment of inertia is insanely fast.

There are a lot of great performance driving schools out there, though you may need to travel a bit. I think Road Atlanta and AMP have them but they are more focused on track driving. I went to Bondurant a few years ago, took the class locally at Autobahn Country Club, and almost did Spring Mountain/Ron Fellows this past winter. They all focus on fundamentals like skid recovery, weight transfer, braking technique, etc., and have more advanced programs that get you into the road racing stuff once you're ready.

Happy to share my experiences if you're curious to learn more.

I have a 2012 V6 Panamera and while I do love that car it doesn't compare to my E92. It's still fun to drive, feels solid on the road but it's a big, heavy car and it's noticeable when you drive it. I test drove a V8 and the extra power is nice but even that didn't compare much either. Maybe the GTS or Turbo will come closer but that adds a lot more $$$ but I'm sure it would be more fun to drive. If you can test drive all of them, by all means go for it!
I took the E92 out to Tahoe for my first "fun" drive over the weekend and I know I wouldn't feel comfortable taking those corners that fast in the Panamera. I'm sure a far more experienced driver would do far better but that's just my take. I'm still getting a feel for the M3 so plan on taking a performance driving course this summer.

Honestly no Porsche will be like an E90 due to the weight distribution of the car. I just purchased a 997.1 GT3 and I have to say the power delivery is very close but nothing else is the same.

There is not a Porsche that is anywhere close. Weirdly, the Macan feels lighter than the Panamera, but its AWD with a rear biased sport modes.

The Boxster/Cayman is an absolutely amazing chassis experience. For anything below grand touring, its better than the 911 if you don't want to take on the challenge of the 911 architecture prior to the 991.

A 997.1 GT3 is a unique challenge at 8/10 or above. Have fun! It isnt at home off of the track or Angeles Crest. Most that are for sale are available because someone bought them for the street or didn't understand the challenges of frequent track days. I'm a fan of the 997.2 GT3 and (now unaffordable to track) RS, but I'm rapidly becoming a fan of paddles instead of clutches on the track.

In terms of driving dynamics, Panamera GTS or Turbo.

FR layout is fundamentally different from RR or MR layout of Porsche’s sports car variants.
I still chuckle at the fact that 911s are basically powerful VW beetles with reverse drivetrain...

My GT3 is a 2007. It is a pretty heavy spec with PCCBs and Full leather. 11/10 recommend all e9x M guys to make the switch to one or add like I did if at all possible.

The level of enjoyment is insane. It is a much more exotic experience. I have to say the worst part about it is the long front overhang for driving around. I will probably switch to a 997.2 with front axle lift in the next few years.

Looks great. I _love_ GT silver.

Are you planning on tracking it? I personally struggle to risk a $100k car on the track in my own personal financial situation (ie not insanely wealthy).

I will track it a few times but I will full insure through Lockton Motorsports like I do with my E90

Join SCCA and you get a discount. Should pay for itself quickly. They do have multi-event passes, too.

Otherwise, use The Open Track for full-season coverage.

Doubt they'll have a 997.2, and resale has been very strong on them for the last 2 years. Still $40k+ for a clean low mile 997.2

The 911 and m3 are very different cars, and it would be hard to go wrong with either.

I've been a member of SCCA for 25 years. Lockton's coverage is better $ by the individual track day when, like me, you do less than 10 days a year. I've run all the numbers for 10-ish cars before I bought the E90.

I almost posted in the other thread about this but IMO the 997.1 GT3 is probably the closest feel and spirit to our M3's. Also agree that it's a great upgrade from our cars, and probably the only one I'd consider losing our high revving NA V8 for. I had a bunch of hours in the driver seat of a GT3RS and it's night and day better than the M3.

My point was more that if you are doing a lot of events over the course of the season, you should do the math and look at whether or not a package deal is better. It requires commitment but the savings are there.

How much lift does the kit give you?
The only thing holding me back from a 911 is driveway clearance.
Very steep transition from the street, i need to 3 point to get the stock suspension e92 without scraping.
