Running a 3.62 diff with a DCT

I know there has been a lot of back and forth on what it takes to run a 3.62 in a DCT car. I've seen people with experiences that range from no issues to having to do some coding and ECU flashing to complete disaster just short of firey explosion.

Anyone running 3.62 gears? What additional mods have you done if any?

Not running one, but my understanding when I looked into this is that you would need a software re-map to account for the higher FD to prevent a downshift that, on the factory FD would be fine, but would cause you to over-rev on a higher FD.

I would PM Benvo on that. I believe he can do it.

I'm running a Diffsonline 3.62 diff. It was originally installed on my '09 e92 M3 and I had zero issues. I transferred it to my '12 e92 M3 (after selling my '09) and it's still running great. I've been running the diff for a combined ~7 years.

Running the 3.45 diff, too. I really like it. I can get off the line in 2nd with no issues. Only bummer is the increased revs on the freeway at my normal cruise speed, but I am also on a 295/30-18 rear, which is 1" smaller diameter than OE. (It also threw my shift points off at the track, but I'll get those nailed down with more practice.)

I'm really just interested in a 3.62. When I clear my project list, I'll source an E9X 6MT diff and swap the 3.85 into my E46 and then put the 3.62 into the E9X diff and swap it into my E90 DCT.

I'll just try it out. Worst case, I swap my original 3.15 back in.

Having read nearly every post on the topic of DCT and 3.62 FD, I'm still not sure if I need anything changing on the DCT map.

I have the OE GTS map, do I need to worry about any over-rev issues?

I have no experience personally with this. I do have a customer who tried it and later on told me the car was NOT happy after swapping it in. He took it out and I suspect he's still working on a software modification.

Chiming in as this is relevant to my interests.

Working on an S85 DCT swap into E6x Ms and the final drive is something of future concern to me. Having little to no DCT experience of yet, I am fairly *ahem* familiar with the SMG. Swapping 3.91 or 4.10s into our cars is somewhat common, but SMG was never happy with 4.10s without remapping the DME to change the final drive ratio settings.

For those running different than stock final drive ratios on DCT, the reflashes and remaps people speak of, are those simply referring to the DME or something elsewhere? Seeing as the mss60 and mss65 receive inputs for speed from the SMG/DCT, the DSC, as well as a direct wheel speed sensor redundancy input (at least on E6x), it seems that all would be handled in the DME.

On that note, aiming at a top end beast, I know the Fxx DCT guys have problems with a top speed limiter in the DCTs (separate from the DME's vmax tables). Has this been encountered in E9x land as well?

I have no idea I didn't build his car. I'm just reporting what he told me since there isn't much feedback on this subject.

I think you can just program and tell the DME what Final Drive you have and it'll auto compensate. My autel when i hook it up lets me retrofit different differential ratios?

at least i remember seeing it there. I'd have to double check again.

This would be epic if it’s as simple as that. A value/field name or screenshot of the table entry would earn my most sincere gratitude.

3.62 in the DCT would be spectacular

It is so annoying to be chasing a GT3 RS and have them bang off 3 shifts while the M3 ones does one.

Any suggestions on threads/articles/videos discussing gearing options, their effects, and what’s best for whom etc? I would think shortest gearing as possible would be ideal for me as it’s just going to be a car for fun driving, and buying a manual with long gearing seems a shame especially given I’ll never really be on the interstate much, though I guess it may be foolish to effectively completely eliminate my ability to cruise at highway/freeway speeds without sitting at 6,000rpm or something, idk but I’ll never be going anywhere near it’s top speed that’s for damn sure

Reassuring My new Drexler and 3.62 is being installed now, so it’s good to know it’ll just work.

i was told by dinan that they were oem ring and pinions and bmw was no longer going to produce them. instead of sourcing a new supplier and deciding/testing/etc. if they were going to carry them, they decided to discontinue.
