New M3 owner here! My $17K '10 M3, BSL oil report & rod bearings

Hey everyone. Former (current?) 335i owner here who made the switch to the M side.

I recently picked up a 2010 M3 DCT with 82k miles; Alpine White Ext/Black with Carbon trim Int.; ZCW, ZPP and ZTP, EDC, M button and MDM, Enhanced Premium sound...all for $17,500.

Now, that $17,500 came with DCT leakage though - both the oil pan and mechatronics gasket - and valve cover gaskets might be leaking just slightly (it is a BMW after all).

Then I figured: with the car is up on the lift, why not do the RB for peace of mind? While I did an oil change and sent the previous oil sample out to BSL and the results seem good (see below), changing them is probably the route to go.

Total price quoted for the RB (VAC bearings and ARP bolts), DCT gasket/seals and valve covers...drum roll...... $4,000.00 - $4,200.00. If the valve gaskets look okay, it's $3200; which puts me in at least $20,700 ... which I think is still pretty good?

Hopefully the M treats me better than my 335i ... it's been the bane of my existence lol

(Sorry for the shitty S7 pic)

$4k for all that work is a screaming deal.

The bill for my RB's (I went with BE/ARP) + motor mounts (you'll want to do those too) was about $2,800 from an indy shop, which also included the engine mounts, new oil, filter, pan gasket, and miscellaneous stuff. Repairs of my DCT mechatronics leak and valve cover gaskets were another ~$4k from BMW dealer (under warranty).

$20,700 is not to bad..

If it was a 6 speed it would be an insanely good deal.

But since it’s DCT I think it’s just okay.

Would be nice if the throttle actuators were both done already!

The previous owner was from Worcester I believe.

I spent about a week and a half pricing everything out and was pretty surprised at the price I was given from the shop I am going with. They are a pretty well known shop around the area as well.

The cheapest DCT with sub 100k miles within 100 miles of me I could find was $19,995 in CT, 2010 but the interior wasnt in great shape.

I bought a set of TAs from Ebay with 69k on them for $225 for back up. If the gears are rough, I was planning on replacing them and giving the installation a go myself.

I think you got a great deal! Once you get all that fixed it will definitely be more reliable than the 335 haha.

I miss my 335, but I don't miss always feeling like something might break on it.

Depends on which generation of 335.

The N54 are shitboxes.

N55 are very reliable.

Mine is a N55. Almost at the 2 year mark and only 7k miles, I've replaced the radiator, trans cooler oil lines, harmonic balancer (these two were from mechanics negligence prior to me owning it), high pressure fuel pump, low pressure fuel pump, front passenger wheel bearing and tie rods.

I am trying to sell it now but doesn't seem like there is a market for 335i xDrives with 85k.

Alright go easy, if you buy the cheapest 335i in your state like you did with your M3 you couldn’t be surprised there was shit wrong with it

I didn't buy the cheapest N55 in my area and I still got hit by the N54/55 curse with repairs lol.

I was definitely expecting the M3 to not be perfect at the price I purchased it at but even with the repairs that were needed (not preventative maintenance with the RB), looks like I still made out well.

Speaking of which; currently in the shop now getting repairs done

Picking the car up tomorrow. Was told the rod bearings were completely worn down... I am glad I followed my instinct and decided not to put any miles on the car before getting the RBs replaced. Hopefully I can post some pictures.
