this is so true, I never understand when I'm literally 30 spots away from the closest person and then some random car is parked next to me when I get back and we are the only 2 cars within miles of anyone

I thought I was the only one... bizarre

Lots of good tips here to avoid door dings - I use them all.

When I traded in my 996 Targa in 2006, I'd had it for 3 years and it was in mint condition. I came back to the Porsche dealership about a week later and saw my old 996 Targa sitting on their lot with 2 fresh door dings. Too many people out their either don't care or are deliberate about it.

Bottom line: If you want to stay free of door dings, YOU have to make the effort.

I hear you buddy. I avoid trees as well for the same reason. I look for shade behind or beside buildings, where nobody parks, so no risk of dings or crap falling on your clean car either .
And yes, you have to be careful with curbs and parking stops. I've sold all my cars without any bumper/wheel rash since I can remember. And no parellel parking at all unless it's a special circumstance, like a stand-alone parking meter, or just dropping something. I'm good at it too (you have to in order not to rash you wheels/bumpers), but as you said, most others are not.

One last comment. My wife finally understands my parking obsession after getting her car banged up several times, and now also parks far away, but I still ask if she wants me to drop her at the door before parking my car since I don't like her b*tching about it . She hasn't lately, but gave me a hard time for years. Take care folks.

all my friends think i'm obessive compulsive or just plain weird for parking in the far corner/nosebleed section of the parking lot. but you gotta do it if you want your car to remain blemish free. (the average person doesn't understand this, as they cannot see door dings, or just think they are an inevitable part of car ownership). in fact, most people i know see nothing wrong with resting their door against the door next to them as they get in/out of their car.

often times I try not to drive anywhere i need to park it for more than 10-15 minutes. if i need to park it somewhere for longer than that, i'll park it in a faraway safe place and walk a mile if i have to.
