New iDrive controller in 5 series with old idrive system

For the best thing about the new idrive is the new controls, yeah some of the displays are nice. The google maps stuff is cool, but you don't use that everyday, but the controls you do. I got in a loaner 535i this morning and notice it had the new idrive controls, but it was the old system. This makes me wonder, will the new controls work with the old the system?

yes, the new controller and shortcut buttons will work in the 'older' idrive cars. The 535 that you drove was built right at the start of the new idrive cars...

you need to buy the idrive controller switch/buttons as well as the center console trim piece to house the unit since it much different in shape.

Search as there are two P/N depending if the transmission is M-DCT or 6-speed... I posted both somewhere here.

The center console has been on back order for the last two months, and still no ETA from Germany. Australia has about six units on back order. Don't know whether the delay is due to the halt in production of M3. I have the controller but not console .... very frustrating

can't you trim your old console to make the new idrive fit?
thats what I would do...or try!

Quick question: Is the top center console (next to the iDrive controller and shift boot) leather on extended cars? I know the sides are, but the top feels just like the glovebox, which is leather (supposedly

From what I heard from my parts manager is that all of them come leather wrapped - but you can specify manual or twin-clutch with drive logic (M-DCT).

Here is an update (kinda)for all that are interested in the CIC controller on a CCC (pre-2009) idrive.

Since I am having my center console wrapped in Carbon leather (www.aidesign.com has a project car on their site - saw it today in person and it is a great match to factory) in July, I figured I might was well swap out the controller too (I was told that the extended leather center console on the M3 is more difficult to adhere the carbon to than the plastic console). I'm purchasing a new center console (51-16-9-145-147) and the controller (65-82-9-213-309) then having that wrapped in the Carbon Leather (along with the back seat tunnel). With any luck, it will actually work

My appointment w/ AI is set for July 15th, so I will post videos as soon as I get my M3 back from them.

Of course, now that I think about it I hope that A) my dealership can get the parts in on time like they said, and B) if it doesn't work I suppose I should have my current console wrapped as well.
