Choosing the right exhaust resonator. Please Help!
Hi
I'm an old member, been away from forums and all but came again I have bought the car with this setup already installed ( Borla Axle back + custom x-pipe + test pipes + secondary catts delete) and the car has no tune. Exhaust Setup looks like this I love the sound and all but its causing too much drone when cruising around and on cold starts. So I said I must do something about it to reduce this mad drone. Sadly previous owner sold all his stock exhaust, so I went to a local shop and he suggested to install what he called "drone killer" it looks like this. First when I looked at it I didn't find it right, i find it too restricted, but that mechanic tried to convince its not, so I went ahead and installed it. I drove with the car and it somewhat killed the drone + it killed some horsepower with it. I've showed my setup to one of my friend and he suggested to take it off straight away, he said its too dangerous, its causing too much back pressure, and u may break your engine. So my question to you all is this right?? or should i go with some other resonators, any suggestions for resonators or other mod to kill the drone is welcome. Thanks

The back pressure thing is purely speculative. However what you really want to do is change that X-Pipe to one with at least 1 pair of high flow cats and resonators. That will likely solve your drone issues.

Those drone killers look terrible IMO, you did the right thing to take them off. If you want to remain fully catless to maximize performance, you could consider a quad resonator setup as well (think Dinan mid pipe).
As for which resonators, I have heard good things about Aero AR series resonators but I do not have experience with this product personally: https://aeroexhaust.com/c-1389193-resonators.html

4 resonators wound help a lot. A few companies make 2.5 in/out with 4.0” bodies, typically around 14” total length including flanges.

I second the above, I was able to find resonators with 3" inlets and outlets and 4" body in here. Try finding a 2.5" in/out with 4" body resonators and have them install it. With the borla I would second finding a way to go with 4 resonators but remove those "engine killers" at your earliest.
If not locally, maybe check these on ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vibrant-179...282ec6892a0243

I currently run 2 vibrant and 2 no name resonators. I will be remaking my x pipe to move the x forward and change resonators since mine is a louder than I want. With a stock rear exhaust it might be ok. With a stock x pipe it is ok. With both a 4 resonator aftermarket x pipe and an aftermarket rear exhaust it is loud. If it is still too loud after rebuilding the x pipe then I will go back to a stock rear exhaust since the rear affects sound and not really power — the x pipe makes power so it is staying. Currently considering what resonators to try next. Maybe 18” vibrant plus 14” vibrant or maybe 4 14” from another brand.
I use only straight through resonators - you can see right through with no obstructions other than finned or louver pipe wall. Last edited by pbonsalb; 07-26-2019 at 03:09 PM.. |

Appreciate all for your help.

So would you reckon these 2.5 4"body vibrant resonators would do the job with the stock resonators ? And where should I install them, same place as the secondary catts? I have currently the "drone killers" installed in this place Would the vibrant fit in the same place or do i need to go a little back.

Drone is generally lack of resonators when you are running no cats.
I run this quad resonated pipe, only have a tiny drone at 2000 rpms paired with Megan rear section. Very happy with it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fits-BMW-E9...MAAOSwstxcrOOS

You need to lose the mufflers, those look like the borla s-type which is notorious for drone. No amount of work on the x pipe will change that, as those mufflers were reported to drone heavily on a stock x pipe. I'd start shopping for a new or stock muffler. Mufflers are really the big cause of drone. Making adjustments to the X can just tame it a little.

You would usually want the quad resonators to go like the one in the below post - that is the borla xpipe.
https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=553778 You have to take the measurments to see if resonators would fit or not. On the custom Xpipe that you have, looks like you will have to put resonators in place of where the cats goes usually as you have pushed the mounting points of the xpipe to the back.
