Am I crazy....

...for considering trading my E9X M3 for the new 1M? Something about the 1M really attracts me. It could be the styling or the smaller size; it could also be that the 1M's aggressive exterior is reminiscent of the E46 M3 (..to me). Either way, I'm really considering purchasing the new car despite LOVING the V8 in the current M3. Does anybody else share this sentiment?

you will have to wait and drive one i would guess. I really like the lines and make up of the 1M as well but still need to drive it before i decide if i will switch over or not.

Honestly I dont see what the hype is with the 1M. Its cool for the price range but IMO still nowhere even close to having the same appeal as the M3..... I think you might just be caught up in the hype and appeal of a new car that nobody has yet. Just my 2c.

If you had the 1M for the past couple years and the E9X V8 M3 just came out then which one would you want? Would you still choose the 1M for the M3 in that scenario?

I don't think I'm suffering from the "lastest & greatest" syndrome. I miss having a coupe, and I LOVE the styling of the 1M. I should have originally opted for a coupe M3. The 1M still would have been an attractive car to me though.

After noticing that you are driving an E90 and not an E92 then I can see why this thought would be crossing your mind. You want the more sporty feel that I am guessing you are not getting from the 4 door (not to knock e90's).....I am on my second BMW coupe and after owning an E92 for the past 3 years, I would definitely miss the sporty nature of a coupe if I didn't have one any more.

You must have opted for the 4 door for a reason. Now considering that same reason, do you think that ditching the 4 door and going to an even smaller 1 series coupe will suffice for your needs? Where as if you went with an E92 then the size is still decent enough to effectively and efficiently take care of what you need to take care of.

Again, just my 2c.

It's just another N54 car, having had a modded 335 I would not go back to an N54.

However, if you were going to buy the 1M and drop the S65 in it out of the M3, I would do THAT

+1000

I bet there are plenty of modded 135i's out there that would kick the 1Ms ass! I just see the 1M as a tuned version of the 135i. Its the same motor whereas the 335i and the M3 are really to separate cars with two separate motors.

That's like trading in a 997 to get a Boxster.

Bad idea -- but it's your money

I opted for the sedan back in '08 simply because I decided at the last minute to trade in my other BMW, and the 0.9% (..with the ///M school) was going to expire. It was more of a "take the best compromise" type of purchase. I don't regret purchasing the sedan, but coming from multiple E46 ///M3 coupes has me missing that two-door feel. Simply put, interior size/rear seats/etc. wasn't a consideration. We recently purchased a 128i with the M-Package for my g/f, and it's a fun little car to drive. I can just imagine the 1 in M form.

Having had the same, I would not venture to say it's just another N54 car. Initial impressions from people who drove it are very positive, and need I remind you that the M3 did *not* meet with unanimous initial praise when it was released?

I'd wait, then take one for a long long test drive without a salesperson in the car (I typically go during the week).

Wow, I hate the disproportionate look of 1M/135/etc. But, may be it'll grow on me eventually...

My buddy (..whom I've purchased every one of the six BMW's - 3 of them being M3's - that I've owned) will let me take the car out for awhile. I'll see how I feel about it once I'm behind the wheel, and I have an opportunity to assess the car on my terms.

What's up SC? Haven't seen you on the forums in a while.

I would not consider the 1M myself because I love the S65 too much. I also would not want to give up my DCT (that doesn't apply to you though). Finally, I like my convertible a lot, though even if there were a 1M convertible, I would be pretty hesitant to give up the folding hardtop (again, that doesn't apply to you).

I can definitely see myself carefully weighing the next generation 1M vs. the next generation M3 however. That is, if I decide I want to even consider a turbocharged M car, of course.

What's up mk? Work became hectic for awhile, so my surf time suffered. I'm back though!

The S65 is one of the main reasons that I love my current car, so parting with it would be a painful process to say the least. Maybe I just need to mod my bone stock E90.

True, I have not driven the car and only have reviews to read from those that have. EVO wrote that the power started to taper off shortly after 6k rpm which is what I remember and didn't like about the N54. The software was revised for the 1M and I have heard there are revisions to the exhaust manifold/turbos but I don't think they could have improved the N54 THAT much.......but we'll see.

I tend to agree with the 997 to boxster comparison in the interim
