Did you get to go out on the track today? Did you start at 28psi cold?

I usually start at 27-28 psi cold which usually gets me to 36 psi with other tires, but at COTA, I got to 40+ psi with the Federals after a session or two. I’d probably have to start at 24 if I wanted to reach 36 hot.

E46 M3 that weighs about 3300 with driver

Great info! What sizes are you using?
I think for Summit Point I would start around 26, VIR around 28psi then. I'm tracking these Federal things in 100tw on Ebay, $620 with free shipping makes them awful tempting.

I did get to go out. Unfortunately weather was cooler than I anticipated. I kept them at 30 cold and with temps yesterday they did ok. Little greasy near the end and up around 38 hot. Going to NJMP next weekend. Hopefully weather cooperates and I can try 28!

Fwiw - i have about 15 sessions on my 265/35/18 FZ201's (on 9.5's) and i am significantly slower than almost corded NT01's. About 3 seconds around a 1:20 lap. Maybe they are heat cycled out, maybe it's due to the width but they just do not give me the same confidence that the NT01's did.

They sit funny on the wheel too. When i place the wheel/tire on the ground, the rim actually pokes past the tire edge, which i do not like. Maybe i will try a 285/30/18.

Here is a pic of the fz201's vs a 275/35 NT01. The 265/35/18 is much smaller in width and overall height.

Dang, that's fast wear. I have two long days on my set, and I'm scheduled for one long day and two regular days next weekend on a very abrasive track, so I'll see what gives.

Maybe they need heat cycling before use? If so, they're not worth the hassle and I'll just go back to NT01s.

Summit Main, 1 long day and 2 regular HPDE days, and all is well. Still gripping a little better than NT01, and not wearing excessively.

I know that the places I tried ordering these from were out (it’s a lot later in the year) but I was told they’d have more stock on Aug 1st.

I want to pick the brain of some of the people here. I have an 18x10 (f) & 18x11 (r) rim and want to try these out but the largest size is a 285/30/18 with a 265 on the front 10” wheel. The smaller contact patch concerns me but I also feel that the tire might be stretched and not give the kind of support in the corners. Any thoughts from the guys with more experience in this category would be great.

Here's a 285 on a 9.5 and it fits perfect. The 285 federal fz201 is a smaller width tire for its size. I'm moving to 285 hoosier r7 and they are a lot wider. I'll post a pic this weekend coming up for comparison

Thank you. The pic isn't too large so it's hard to make out the details. Since it's not a tire that people carry on the west coast, I have no real way of seeing it in person and even test mounting it. The section width says 11.2" on the website. Since you say it runs small for it's size, are you saying to skip this tire and run something better suited to an 11" tire like a 295 or 305?

I'd still love to see your comparison shots. Also, I'll be happy to PM you my cell # so I can see a higher res shot than what you can upload on the app.

I think 265 is too narrow on a 9.5” wide wheel. Would not mount on a 10” wheel.

There is a school of thought in track setups, that the wheel width should match the tread width. The idea being to minimize sidewall deflection and provide repeatable slip angles.

Grassroots Motorsports magazine had a test a few years ago, and wrote an article to back up the theory with some back-to-back testing.

Another school favors getting as much tire width on the car as possible. Makes obvious sense.

Who knows?

I run 235s on 8.5" wheels on one car, and 205s on 7" wheels on another car, and both those setups are pretty close to matched wheel and tread widths. I have run 265s on 9" wheels on another car, which is close to an inch wider than the wheel. What does BMW spec on the car -- is it a 245 on the 8.5" fronts? I'm guessing that's a half inch bigger tread over the wheel. I have run that setup too. I was happy with all of them.

I would be comfortable running 265 on 10s and 285 on 11s, for sure. Would bigger be better? I don't see myself buying both sizes and two sets of identical wheels to make the back-to-back comparison.

I haven't talked with my distributor at Federal in a few months but I'm planning on putting in an order for some 285/35/18s soon.

Would love to make it a bulk order to save some money on shipping. The RE71R addiction is getting a little out of hand... aka my wife and I finally joined our bank accounts lol

I'll hit him up tomorrow and see what kind of supply they have, their shipments are quite small and seem to be quarterly from Asia. They're releasing a new cheater 200trdw tire soon too, I'm try and get an ETA on these

Shoot me a DM.

hey spxxx,

Interested in fz-201s (285/30-18), or even fz-101s (270/650r18).
Are you still selling these?
Thanks
