Question What to do in New Orleans?

Planning a little trip with a friend. I've never been. Any suggestions on what to do, where to eat and/or where to stay? I'm not a party guy so no dance club nonsense. Good live music is a plus, though.

Bourbon street is worth going for a night, that's the bachelor party type area that is dirty but worth visiting.

Frenchmen street is where the more chill live music venues are and is where I spent much more time. Way better for someone like myself who also is not into the more club scene

Pat O'Brien's dueling piano bar is great

Ruby Slipper for brunch, though all the places I ate were great

Bars without cover come around with a tip jar so bring ones or just go to a bar with cover. The live music was great everywhere

I've heard the airboat swamp tours are fun but didn't get to do one

I completely understand. I'm not a fan of oysters but the chargrilled oysters in butter/garlic was something out of the ordinary that you wont find anywhere else.

Stream WWOZ which does a “live wire” broadcast guide every hour or so on upcoming shows at each venue. Lots of great music at Spotted Cat, Tipitinas, etc.

#1 Stay away from Bourbon Street and the French Quarter in general!! Maybe during the day for Cafe Du Monde... Some of the restaurants there are good but really catering to the tourist trade.

For music, Frenchman Street is cool to walk around for jazz etc. Check out Three Muses, Snug Harbor there... For something more on the rock side, Tipitina's is great as is Maple Leaf. Both are in the part of town we call Uptown. House of Blues in the quarter has some good shows but check the calendar to see who is playing. Preservation Hall in the Quarter is cool as well but... not a fan of the Quarter but if its a good show its worth going.

For food, so many places... Jacques-Imo's is near Maple leaf. Parkway Bakery has some of the best po-boys as does Domilise's. Cochon for cajun, Coquette and Herbsaint are local favorites. For something funky try Turkey and the Wolf! I would do Peche for seafood. DTB in the Rivebend area (not far from Maple Leaf) is good as well. Some of my favorites are Patois and Upperline in addition to those above.

WWII museum is a must! It's a big place so plan on spending some time there if you have it to spare. Ogden Museum of Southern Art is also worth a stop. Swamp tours are ok if you've never seen it but if time is limited I would pass.

Cemetery walking tours are kind cool in creepy way. Given that we are built on swampland, all the graves are above ground and many are quite elaborate. Street car ride down St. Charles Ave is worth the time as well.

PM with any additional questions...

One thing that I will tell you; if you want to go to a strip club; 99.9% of them are absolutely nasty. The ones with ads on the streets and the ones with free cover are not even worth going into and the ads about the shows are completely false. The only club and with a low cover even remotely going into is the Penthouse club on Iberville... trust me on this one.

Otherwise, the Aquarium, Zoo, Cafe Du Mond, all of French Quarter and The riverwalk are cool. Be careful to not go on a weekend when any sort of event is going on... Hotels will cost many times more and it will be way too crowded.

Why in the world would a tourist going to NO stay away from French Quarter? Having been there 20 times, thats about the dumbest advice known to man. French Quarter is the heart of New Orleans and is where almost all of the live music is which OP is looking for. It's also walking distance from virtually everything else.

Sorry but most of the music in New Orleans is definitely NOT in the French Quarter. Other than that, the Quarter is dirty, full of cheesy bars and of course all the really low quality strip joints you seem to have visited, Of course there are some things worth doing in the Quarter and if you read my entire post you would have seen that I did recommend those.

Most coming from out of town think the French Quarter is all there is in New Orleans but there is so much more to the city. Simply trying to expand the OP's horizons beyond strip joints in the Quarter...
