There are aftermarket oil coolers you can buy if you track your car. Next to no one needs one for street driving. |

appreciate the feedback and I've definitely searched other threads, I responded to this one because the scenario is the most similar to mine...
From the threads I've searched I can't seem to find a reasonable conclusion. anything from 1. It's fine/normal. 1a. It's not normal (drive on track at over 100 degrees and never went past 210) 2. water pump/thermostat 3. radiator or oil cooler needs replaced/updated. 4. Coolant issue 5. Early warning signs of bearing failure. 6. Fan etc. If this is in fact normal I can live with it. but being uncertain and going on middle of nowwhere 200 mile backroads drives makes things feel very dicey. Any additional help will be greatly appreciated. |

appreciate that... for testing purposes. I'm going to (in order)
1. Flush/purge coolant. 2. change thermostat 3. change water pump 4. check/update/replace radiator/oil cooler. (OEM only) and see where that takes us. My only remaining concern based on forum research is that, it's happening to folks, only after a couple years of almost no change in oil temps. |

good point! I'll make sure they check that...
my local shop that focuses on e90's says that they see this and they do a lower temp thermometer/full flush+purge of coolant in case there is blockage/and redline water wetter. So we'll see later today and report back... |

Interesting. Troy Jeup, who has more experience rebuilding S85 and S65 combined (mostly S85) than anyone else at close to 500 engines, recommends a hotter coolant thermostat to reduce wear on a street driven car.

Highly doubt he built close to 500 engines. 500 engines in 12 years (since 2008) is +/-41 engines a year, which mean one engine every 8.8 days.

How is your engine fan working. It has 2 speeds. High is pretty loud. Do both speeds work? If my oil temp is past about 220, the fan runs high.

Ok. I got the oil temp around 220ish today and pulled over to see if the fan was working. It was definitely working but definitely not on the high setting. I guess is this was the culprit it would be a fan relay issue?? Anything definitive I could test to assure that this was the problem ?

I don’t know the answer since mine works fine, but high does not turn on until 225, at least that is my guess. Maybe it is 230. You could probably look up the fan switch temp or maybe it is programmed into the ECU and uses a sender and there is no switch.

On another note, if the car has what you want except for this temp issue, I'd definitely suggest you keep working to solve that rather then as indicated selling. These cars are getting old so wont be easier to find another "perfect" example. |
