I've been watching the weather... Hopefully it's finished by then. It showed sunny yesterday.

For those of you running Buttonwillow this weekend with SV: what kind of tires are you going to run on? I hope it doesn't rain the entire weekend....

Maybe this will end up a good car control learning experience?

Brand new Nitto NT01 or Pilot Super Sports depending. I'll bring both. If it's just scattered showers it shouldn't be a big deal.

Nice, I think Nt01s would do great with some tread on them in mild rain. I'll be bringing my RS3s and my bald Nt01s lol. Thoughts on euro mdm vs all off for the rain?

Haven't decided yet, Euro MDM is pretty safe in the rain though, as long as you're careful. This is what traction control off looked like for me at Sonoma with PSS:

I reacted, but not fast enough, and by the time I did it was way too late and was just a passenger at this point. Have to take it very, very easy. I was only going about 60-70 mph.

Wow that is pretty scary. Did you hit a standing body of water? That looked pretty quick and violent. Let's hope BW isn't going to be nearly that wet this weekend..

The entire track was a standing body of water, lol. It was REALLY bad. If I hadn't had an Aquapel treated windshield I wouldn't have been able to see half the day. There was that much water on the ground - and it was driving rain. That being said, I tried to find lines throughout the track that had the least standing water on deck. I had gentle throttle input the entire time too, was trying to be very careful. Unfortunately, at this particular instance, I was passing a Miata which probably contributed to the spin. Miata guy contacted me on instagram and sent me the spin, it was humbling seeing it from his perspective haha.

Unfortunately, what I didn't know, until I sat down after the spin and read the specific portion of Ultimate Speed Secrets, was to avoid the "usual" line in the rain since it would be the slipperiest due to all the rubber laid down before it.

nholmes Yeah, I got super lucky. Out of all the places to spin out on that wall infested track, to miss all of them was pure chance. There were a couple times that just shifting gears at high RPM was almost enough to induce spin.

Was a very good learning experience and a huge eye opener about rain driving. Best lap time that day by *anyone* was 2:15 in what looked like a prepped E30 race car. My best time was 2:30 - same configuration in the dry is < 2:00

Were you on or off the gas during the spin? That came around very quick and your hands weren't slow at all. I mean you might have been able to counter steer a moment earlier, but still.

I was going to say that I didn't remember exactly, but fortunately I have the Aim Solo DL data for the spin - threw it together in a video.

It looks like I was on the gas headed into the corner, around 50% throttle, then when I let off the gas, which probably induced the spin. You can see the steering angle below jerk over, where I can feel it about to happen, then when I go full over lock. It happens very quickly. Here's a screenshot of the data:

Link to the data:

Being able to log and see exactly where you screwed up is great, haha.

My caliper piston spreader probably isn't going to be here in time for my truck day this weekend. Any tips or tricks on getting the pistons spread with basic garage tools?

roastbeef What I used before the caliper spreader was an open ended socket wrench (socket being the size large enough to fit the lug nut) with the socket end wrapped in a cotton rag, and then use it as a lever on the piston against the rotor. It worked pretty well, just took longer.

My rationale for wrapping it with the rag was to prevent marring the piston surface with the hard metal, and to give me extra height as a lever. As you compress one piston, the other piston or other two pistons in the pair will tend to rise higher - don't compress one too fast, you have to keep them roughly level. I would compress one slightly, then compress a different one, and rotate between them until they all got down enough.

Also, keep one brake pad in on the other side you're raising the pistons on, that way you're not at risk of popping out a piston on the other side.

I guess you could say I get every penny worth of my brake pads.
Thankfully, rotors looked ok. Lesson learned- carry an extra set!

I'm halfway done. Caliper spreader isn't in yet, so I'm having to be creative. Struggling builds character though.

I roasted a set down to the backing plates in the evo once. I screwed up and ordered a street compound but they did their job.

Here you can see them disintegrating into a cloud of dust that got me black flagged:

Wow, cutting it close, lol. I think I now have 3 sets of DS1.11 pad with about 2-3mm of life left in each. I also found that I screwed up a little by not rotating the pads, since the bottom part of the pads wears a lot more than the top; I'd have something like 6 mm of pad up top and 2 mm of pad a the bottom :/
