is it me or do most people with an okay sized house live in a remote area? most look like they carved a chunk out of the forest or sand. not sure if i could be that far from everything.

that's why i can't decide if i should get a mega house in a remote area or an okay house closer to the coast. :/

I would imagine that people with larger houses in more distant areas got the land for possibly a more decent price, but also did it so they do not have to live around the hecticness of normal suburban living (excessive traffic, problem neighbors, etc).

We moved from 20 miles away from work, to less than 10. We ended up with less yard, smaller house, more expensive... But we are much closer to everything. We feel it is worth the change.

Here is our home, should be moving in within three weeks

For us we wanted to be on a Lake. Plus we wanted to build our own house and we wanted at least an acre of property.

The dirt around the lakes closer to down town is stupid expensive. Like $625k for a 1/4 acre 8 miles from down town Tampa. So we moved 10 miles further north and bought nearly 2 acres for under $197k. Since we were custom building, the house costs the same no matter where we put it.

The kicker is that time from the expensive dirt to down town tampa is a 15 min drive. From our house to DTT is just under 30 at nearly any time of day. The biggest difference is that where our house is now, it's very quite. Like sanctuary quite at times. Summer isn't as quite during the days because of the lake activity, but the rest of the time, quite.

And, because of the geographic shape of Tampa Bay area, the only direction the city can grow, is north and east. East sucks so it's growing north and every day my lake get's closer to down town tampa so to speak. Hopefully the dirt around my lake will be stupid expensive some time soon.

Here's the dining room, kitchen, living room, and the east view.

All the walls are white, it's just the lighting and the stupid iPhone filter I thought would be cool.
Amazing house, so envious right now..

Alright, I'll join in on the game.

To the kid going to medschool, medicine isn't what you think. If you're smart, go into something else if you're just looking for money. Go into medicine if you really love medicine and working with people. Lotsa hassle and not as much money as you think.

So you want to be an anesthesiologist? Their reimbursements along with radiologists, interventional cardiologists, gastroenterologists, etc are all slated for more cuts. Some of these politicians want to get rid of fee for service. They say that we make too much money. Bullshit... But that's another thread... One of the posters said get ready to be a regular employee. That pretty much sums it up.

Regarding bums and freeloaders...

I got fooled it sounds like. I was on my way to NJ from Albany, NY when I stopped at a rest stop. I withdrew some money from the ATM for aero skirts I was picking up. Some guy knocks on my window and gives me this sob story that he and his wife are running out of gas and need to get back to Brooklyn. Well, stupid me, feeling generous and sorry for the couple, I gave him $20. He gets back to his car and I hear him talking to his wife that they can't believe I gave them that much and they pull out some can and stick the $20 bill with all the other money they've scrounged up.

Well, I think to myself, I'm blessed and that $20 is a drop in the bucket compared to everything else I've got. If it helps these freeloaders have a good meal, so be it. If they buy some heroin and end up overdosing, good riddance...

The first picture is my car with the house I'm selling. I'm gonna miss that house. I really don't want to leave.

The other pics are of my new house. The new one has a three car garage, which is a big plus, and a nice outdoor fireplace. But no basement or man cave. That's ok, I work all the time anyway...

Cheers to everyone else here who is chasing or living the dream!

I live in a tiny 800sq cabin in the mountains on 7 acres that I'm building myself. It's the same size as some of the car garages I've seen in this thread haha.

Haha no. It's very inexpensive to live out here. Property taxes are $200 a year and my electrical bill is $35 a month. It's cheap, beautiful, crime free, and has cop-free twisting country roads.

1100sq ft equates to about 500k in San Jose so it's all relative

That's a corner view from our front yard (picture 1) and a third story view of our backyard from our porch (picture 2).

The house itself is just a typical mediterranean style stucco house that people have probably seen a million of. The coolest thing about our house is our backyard, privacy, and the view of downtown Austin. July 4ths are nice because you get a clear view of the fireworks directly from our porch.
