Clubsport.M3 Nordschleife build

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce my 2011 BMW E92. I live in Europe and use the car mainly on the German Nürburgring Nordschleife. I have a yearly card so try to squeeze in as many laps as I can.

Some pictures:

Suspension and brakes
  • KW Clubsport V2 (Springrate front: 160-200, Springrate rear: 120-120)
  • Uniball rear suspension
  • Renewed OEM diff bushings
  • Solid aluminum rear subframe bushings
  • AP PRO5000R BBK front with AP racing discs
  • Pagid RST3+ pads front
  • Custom compound rear
  • BBS GT4 BMW Motorsport wheels 18x10j 24ET square
  • Nankang AR-1 265/30/18

Exterior
  • GTR carbon hood
  • GTR carbon front fenders
  • GT4 carbon rear wing
  • GT4 carbon front lip with brake ducts
  • GT4 carbon airduct for DCT cooler
  • OEM ZCP carbon mirrors
  • OEM ZCP carbon rear spoiler
  • Pinnacle motorsport aluminum undertray

Engine and drivetrain
  • Karbonius carbon intake plenum
  • Eventuri carbon elbow
  • Eventuri carbon airlid cover
  • DO88 water cooler
  • DO88 engine oil cooler
  • DCT cooler from GT4 racecar (custom)
  • +1l DCT pan kit
  • Underdrive pulley kit
  • Custom differential made in Germany
  • Oil thermostat delete
  • Vibratechnics engine mounts
  • Remus titanium exhaust

Interior
  • Recaro SPG XL with carbon back and custom upholstery
  • Schroth 4 point harness
  • Wiechers clubsport cage
  • AK Motion display in vent for temps

Car is really rewarding to drive and has proven to be quite reliable. Im keeping it 4.0l for sake of reliability and also don't feel the need for a supercharger with this track use. The Nordschleife is a very technical track where 400 horsepower is enough. Rod bearings replaced twice at 120.000km and 165.000km. Currently at a mighty 202.000km and still on the original throttle actuators. I clean them every year and grease them with Wurth HHS5000.

I hope to keep this thread a bit up to date with maintenance and mods! Modding here is quite hard, as all the modifications *have* to go in the papers of the car. In order to do that, the parts need official recognition from the German road and safety department. And you need to pay for every single extra entry.

All the best from the Netherlands
~Martijn

Your wheel is nice, makes me want to get rid of my flat bottom wheel.

spammysammich the 2nd set of bearings were from ACL. Normal size, not the -0.0025" ones. This is the best picture I have, they have been out for 2 years now:

I will replace the bearings again in february. Taking out the 3rd set of bearings - OEM ones. Will post pics again.

tigermack I like the looks of the wheel, just a tad too thick for my liking. I dont see the need upgrading to KMP wheel right now, so will probably end up refurbing this one.

I envy you! There are plenty of tracks around me but not the Ring. If it were close I'd be the guy everyone has seen but may not know. Keep up the posts here so we can be part of that please. Agree with The Beef, best color.

It's going to be very interesting to compare and contrast the third set. Very few of us seem to have changed as often and even fewer subject them to this type of load. I'm excited to see the results. What is going into it in February?

Do you mind posting your rebound and compression settings for your clubsports?

Thanks guys i like the color too. But actually...it's at the paint shop for a full respray in a new color I will post some pictures later today, as the paint just got mixed.

No problem on posting my alignment and suspension specs, can you also send me yours? Here we go, counted from full stiff:

Rebound:
- Front: 9 clicks back
- Rear: 4 clicks back

Bump:
- Front 0 clicks back
- Rear 2 clicks back

Feedback: i am quite happy with this setting. The rear is a little harsh, and the Nordschleife is not far as smooth as a GP track. So on high speed corners (100mph+) it feels as the car wants to kind of "step out" about half a foot to the outside of the corner. I got used to it now but it was quite scary at first.

Alignment specs:
1618kg

Toe:
1mm in each side on front axle / 0.18" total
2mm in each side on rear axle / 0.36" total

Front camber: -3.4
Rear camber: -2.65

ps this is a nice website to convert mm to degrees of toe: https://robrobinette.com/ConvertToeInchesToDegrees.htm

I have just ordered ACL extra clearance bearings (0.0025") for replacement in february. They are available, economic and I havent really read bad things about them.

Awesome man! Your car looks properly set up for the track. Love the shots of it on the track. Keep enjoying it man. Does it get street driven much with this setup?

ccbl and Rochen_00 thanks! I used to drive it more on the street when i had softer spring rates. Honestly it get's a bit annoying to drive it on the street with this set-up. It's perfect on track though. I wish it was easier to compromise. Even when I soften up the rebound and compression the car is still dominated by the spring rates. I wonder how others do this with a clubsport build. Maybe an upgrade to KW Competition will give more refines dampening characteristics making it more bearable.

Also a bit concerned with the 100 threadwear tires and the camber and toe settings. I think it will easily eat the tire when needing to do some highway miles.

Color change to Sakhir II

Colour change to Sakhir Orange II

Although the Space Grey is not a boring grey color at all, and it's quite easy to keep clean, I really wanted something more flashy for this car. It took me quite some time to decide what I wanted. Once you go down the road of investigating BMW Individual and Porsche Paint to Sample colors... you come across a lot of amazing stuff.

I considered Voodoo Blue and Signal Yellow. Flat colors with no metallic, perfect for track use but quite "out there". Looked at Porsche Oak Green Metallic, which is beautiful but not the right color for still an aggressive looking track car to me. Ended up going for Sakhir Orange II - i love the subtle flop and it's a bit more special than Valencia Orange (1M) of Sunset Orange (M2) for me. Next to that, I have ever only seen one E92 M3 in this colour from BMW Individual.

It started with some prep work, making the typical "Schirmer style" holes in the rear bumper. Got to say the paintshop did an amazing job:

Then time to remove all the windows from the car, all panels incl doors, hood, bumpers (remove GT4 lip), trunk (remove spoilers) sand and prep all the surfaces. This was a good week of work, the devil is in the details and I want to have an outstanding result so told the shop not to compromise on anything. The engine bay will also be painted at a later stage. I can't stand looking at silver strut towers when opening the hood.

Put the primer on:

And mix the paint. I have to admit that I got super excited seeing the paint. After endless browsing online for color inspiration it all of a sudden got very real. No way back soon!

Up next was applying the base coat. The base coat of Sakhir Orange II looks very similar to BMW Frozen Red. The carbon roof has been wet sanded on my request and will get a new layer of clear coat too:

And here is the result so far:

It's really nice to see the vision coming together with this first step. And the guys at Autoschade Albrandsewaard are doing a great job with the paintwork, being patient will all my tedious small requests and sending over pictures on a daily basis.

Rest of the work will continue in the upcoming week. Being the hood, doors, fenders and engine bay.

I stuck with the KW recommended settings for now. 6/9 from full hard front/rear for rebound and 6 clicks from full hard front/rear bump. The adjustment instructions caution against running 0 clicks from full hard at either adjuster for risk of damaging the valves. I do not know the validity of this. Thought I might just mention though. I'm running 2 way clubsports but have no context for how they perform on track. They definitely aren't the most compliant for the street. The car came to me with them adjusted to 10/10 front and rear for rebound, I made no bump adjustments.

If you are also running the stock sprint rate then this is perfectly fine for the street. Changing springrates really resets the clicks of the car. I'm aware of the 0-ing of the clicks (full stiff), i now remember with you saying that - that i changed it to -1.

Thanks for the positive replies here about the color. Next is finding a solution against paintchips that will not cost me an arm and a leg. PPF is great, but close to 3k for the nose of the car. I might try 3 layers of a hard ceramic coating..although im not sure how effective that will be.

I'm trying to decide the best paint protection scheme myself. The front hood and fenders are a mess as the previous owner attempted to fix a massive rock chip/ dent himself and removed all the ppf with gasoline! He was able to repair with paintless dent removal and touch up paint but it isn't a clean repair and beyond my comfort zone to correct. I'm very interested in what you decide. I am leaning towards a possible respray and stek but I need to shop around a bit get more options. Definitely keeping Dakar Yellow.
