M performance exhaust with midpipe / x-pipe

Hi guys,

I have a May 2011 IB e90 M3, when I bought my car, the dealer threw in the M performance exhaust along with the tasty CF bits like boot spoiler, front splitters, wing mirror covers etc.

I was just wondering if I can install an akra midpipe / x-pipe / down pipe together with the M performance exhaust WITHOUT fitment issues. Will I need the CEL delete R module?

Many thanks

I did this and you get a unbearable drone at exactly 4K rpm. I do not recommend it as you need to cut the MP exhaust to remove the flange on the connecting pipe to fit the Akra.

As fugeo said, you might get drone... you would also probably experience the dip at around 3,000rpm due to the Akra. We tune this out, add power and also remove the CEL caused by the cats.

The dealer threw in the 'Performance' items? Nice! Guess cars aren't too cheap in SG so just as well he did!

Like my set up, (akra and AA) you will need to have the Akra x pipe modified to fit any other axel back other than the akra axel back. In doing this, it fits every axel back except the akra.
Thanks guys.... What about m performance exhaust with say challenge street / sport x pipes..... Would they link? Many thanks

I think this has been answered and you will get drone. I would say do it at your own risk

I tried to pair my performance exhaust with the Borla x-pipe and it became way too raspy and the smell was terrible, then tried it with the challenge sport x-pipe and was too loud for my taste, both were bolt on installations, I decided to switch to a full akra evo exhaust system that I will be installing next week
I really love the sound of the performance exhaust but wanted an x-pipe and couldnt really find a match for it

I have had it for approx. 3000 miles, BMW gave me this unit as a warranty replacement of a first one that I bought and had that peeling problem, this exhaust tips dont have any problem and the canisters look much better in black, I will post a thread to sell it next week

So i have been and reading everything I could find on the subject of adding a Catless X-Pipe to M Performance exhaust. The M-Performance Exhaust was also already installed on my car when I bought it. It appears as if though there is no real solution other than getting rid of the Performance exhaust and going with a completely new set-up. Is this correct? Has anyone sucessfully gotten rid of their cats with the M Performance exhaust WITHOUT serious rasp and drone?

I have the fabspeed hfc & xpipe with a modded oem exhaust. I got horrible rasp at first. I then added 2 resonators to make the xpipe quad resonated. That got rid of 95% of the rasp and the drone is next to none. I love the way my car sounds now! I know you asked about catless and M exhaust but a catless quad resonated xpipe should give you a good sound.

I have a quad resonated catless x-pipe and have no drone or rasp, but stock exhaust. Apparently, experiences can vary. See Post #7 for someone who had the quad resonated catless Borla x-pipe and had rasp with the BMW performance exhaust.

Seems like the rear exhaust affects sound considerably and you would want a throatier exhaust. The BMW performance exhaust will still be relatively mild, because nothing BMW sells will be hard core.

Thx,

Anyone pair the M Performance Exhaust w/ a Dinan X-Pipe? Yup, thinking about warranty safe mods.

At first I loved it.

Then, I started hearing the rasp and I decided I didn't like it. It is very nice from a volume point of view. Quiet when you are driving slow, loud when you are on it hard... Anyway, you can decide from yourself, but it makes itself into a raspy mess with an x pipe.

Any X pipe designed to mount to a factory style rear section works fine, Gintani, Fabspeed, Challenge, MXP, etc etc.

1. The Dinan X pipe is NOT covered under their warranty
2. Dinan doesn't ever "retain" the factory warranty, it supplants it with their own. Some dealers will work with this, some won't.

  1. You're right, I just saw that on their website. For some reason, I thought it was warrantied.
  2. Whoa, my sales guy said I should consider Dinan because it doesn't void the BMW warranty... So, you're saying a BMW dealership could blame issues on Dinan and not cover it under my BMW warranty and, if the Dinan stuff caused issues outside their product, they wouldn't cover it either? Wait... why buy Dinan again?!

just wanted to clarify - this is with the turner test pipes/oem secondary cats and resonators? I've tried the standard exhaust with an xpipe and it sounded pretty weird....

Thanks,
Barry

Thanks,

This is the Turner test pipes with stock secondaries + resonators and the BMW Performance exhaust. I did not like the tone, it sounded similar to a stock exhaust with a cat delete but louder.
