Paint flaking underneath edge of trunk lid

Just noticed some paint flaking from the edge of the trunk lid. See pics -

Overall paint condition is perfect, and fortunately it seems to be isolated to this area.

Any ideas as to what caused this? botched repaint, age, heat damage? The car is an 08 from AZ.

this is usually a sign of a poor quality repaint. They didnt take the time to properly prep the edge of the trunk, so the paint is failing and lifting. have seen this many times in my line of work.

Your picture shows a bad repaint from the past...

What are some signs that indicate a repaint?

I looked another AW e92 which also had similar cracking on that raised area which the owner attributed to it being a "weld" point..

Could a pressure washer cause this? The paint was fine over a year ago -

Edit - Likely cause is the pressure washer. I inspected the trunk and there's only peeling at areas where the water makes direct contact.

- my buddy's AW M3 exhibited similar micro cracks as on the sides of my trunk.

There's nothing on the carfax/autocheck but we all know how reliable they are

Found some pics from a year and a half ago and it doesn't look like it was flaking then..

Worst case scenario...
Maybe your car was involved in a minor accident , and it was (bad) repainted by a friend or an acquaintance .
And so the whole situation came never on paper , and not reported to carfax .
Personal I think your trunk is a case of hidden defects...

Do you happen to use a pressure washer too?

i have seen pressure washers do terrible things to paint... i NEVER use pressure washers on my personal vehicles. All it takes is 1 paint chip, and the pressure washer can blow off huge flakes of paint because that little rock chip allowed the pressurized water to get under the basecoat...

if you get too close with a pressure washer, it can happen. lots of people use them without issue. the water pressure isn't a substitute for scrubbing off etched in contaminants... don't get close.

OP, nothing to do with the cracking paint but noticed you don't seem to have a rubber sealing at the bottom of your rear window, fell off?
Seems like Monday spray when the paint comes off. Always been using high pressure water on y cars incl the M3 since years, never had any issue. IMO the pain should certainly handle some water!

E92s don't have any seal for the lower part of the rear window.

The E90s do have them though - Retrofit ?

You are probably better off going to good paint shop to see if they can touch it up in a way, so it doesn't run to the exterior, and probably so it doesn't give you any rust issues (not sure if the trunk is steel and not alu.)

That's interesting lol. Solid info!

I've scraped off the flaking and will apply some touch up. The underside of the trunk seems to be coated so should be okay for now as the flaking is isolated to the raised edge.
