Had another go tonight, with more success.
Went to Joanne's Fabrics again and picked up thinner thread. I took a different color reference with me - found this image online: I realized that the dark blue has some purple in it, and the light blue is more of a green oceanic blue. It actually looks, out of context, like Laguna Seca Blue to me. I bought these spools and used the first, third, and fifth ones. The thread I used is: Gutermann SewAll thread #263 "Geneva Blue" #610 "Mystic Blue" #406 "Tiger Lily" This thread is significantly thinner than what I tried initially and I think it's a better look. It's also easier to sew. Using the same pattern as described in my last post I went through and did the red and light blue. Zig-zagged them with the dark blue. Go through every other loop on each side, very simple. If you can lace your shoes, you can do this. Finished product - only one of the three boot seams, but representative! Didn't bother to tighten down the thread at the ends either since this is my practice boot. There you have it! Total cost of supplies is $2/spool plus a pack of needles, so maybe $10. Super easy and a really nice finished result. Go spend the $350 you didn't send IND on something else for your car! |

Nice work! How close of a match is the color and thread size to the steering wheel? Any chance you can snap a side by side of the wheel and your practice boot for a comparison? Thanks.

Back with photos, as promised. Lucky you, I just bought a DSLR so no more iPhone shots.
You can see that my steering wheel is a bit grungy, haven't cleaned it since I bought the car. The red on the boot is slightly brighter and the dark blue is slightly less purple than the stitching on the steering wheel. The light blue may have slightly more green in it on the steering wheel. On a related note, if anyone has tips to cleaning up my steering wheel, please let me know... I'm thinking tooth brush + water. Here are nicer shots of the installed boots. |

Thanks for the update. I was inpatient so I went and bought the thread this past weekend but never got around to doing it. I think the color match is close enough, but maybe I'll try for that perfect match. For the steering wheel (and leather in general) I have had excellent results with leather masters strong cleaner with a brush and their leather protection cream.

Thanks for posting up your thread size and colors. This thread size is smaller than the stock thread. I was initially wishing I used thicker thread to match the stock thread size, but this is good in its own way. So I'm just gonna stick with it. I did the e-brake boot first. It took me about 6 hours, which included time to figure out the best techniques. The shift boot took me about 3 hours. It was VERY tedious. So I definitely don't want to re-do anything anytime soon.
Here's my finished product. All I have is my crappy camera phone, so it's really hard to take low light long exposure pictures that illustrate how the stitch looks.

Nice work! Yeah, it is a bit tedious, but I just kind of mindlessly stitched while watching youtube vids haha. You can also spend the time thinking about what you can spend all that money you're saving on.

#211 True Blue #266 Brite Navy #405 Flame Red Those 3 seem to be the closet color matches in the Heavy Duty thread. Gutermann doesn't make it in every color the SewAll comes in. I used this color chart to determine what was the next closet to the colors you bought. All of the colors with the tiny black dot come in the thinker thread. http://cdn6.bigcommerce.com/s-rv5ea8...0.1280.jpg?c=2 Amazon (higher price but can add on to prime order): http://www.amazon.com/Stitch-Heavy-D.../dp/B004BP6HZ2 Quilting Warehouse (cheap but 7-10 shipping for $1.99): http://www.quilting-warehouse.com/th...ty-thread.html |

Excellent info here, thanks to all who contributed. I looked at the IND stuff previously and wrote that off of my list of things to buy, way too expensive. I'll be doing this soon!

Bumping this thread. I'm going to give this a shot myself soon. Does anyone have any tips for how to get the boots off of the plastic rings/frames without tearing the leather?

Only advice I could give is to start in the middle and work your way towards the corners. I tore my boots a little in the corners because I had to jam a screwdriver in to pry it off. If you're able to work the boot off from the middle, perhaps you can peel the boot off the corners.

How about reattaching them? Anything other than Super Glue? |

*EDIT*
I actually used Elmer's glue to reattached my boot.

I only detached enough boot so I could do the work. Ended up about half off, kept the other half on, used a small screwdriver to detach it. I used super glue to reattach, which seems to hold well.

I used an exacto knife to slowly cut away the glue or whatever they had holding it together. Reinstalled it using a glue gel on the bottom so it didn't run.

Potentially stupid question, but what gauge needle are you guys using for this? Since it's leather, I would think you'd want something thicker, but since you are just going through existing holes, maybe a thinner gauge will suffice?
