Gouge in tread, is this still safe?
Buying a set of gently used tires (2k miles) and one of them has this weird gouge right in the center of the tread. There was no penetration. Is this still safe? Should I have to worry about this coming apart or anything, especially if I'm driving hard?

I don't think I would worry about that. I'd be more worried about what looks to be some severe wear for only 2k miles, and uneven wear at that.

Yup, those have definitely been tracked hard. The rubber has heated and melted to the point of fusing those groves, I wonder how badly it's ben heat cycled.

Those are super shallow from the factory. This happens to pretty much all of them.

Anyways, that gouge isn't particularly unsafe.

Well they're going to be used on the track so I'm not terribly worried about a bit of wear from some pre-existing hard driving. They would've ended up like that after one or two sessions if I had paid full price for new ones anyway. They were pretty cheap.

Those tires looked a little "cooked" for the given mileage but the gouge doesn't look to be too bad.
