Rcase, thanks for sharing.

I found in your earlier post' the engine had around 50k+ miles on it but couldn't find any additional details other than you had a tune. Would you care to share some oil interval and warm up etc procedure?

+1, also the spark plug maintenance routine as well. Those upper shells don't look like an oil starvation or oil overheating issue, the bottom halves don't show much copper.

interesting. I was at Oktoberfest at the Laguna Seca track and ended talking to a previous Dinan employee who asked me about my E90 M3 and specifically the rod bearings. It started me looking into the topic and I ended up having Bavarian Work Shop in Woodland Hills CA replace my bearings. Just a bit of background first. I bought the car in Sept. of 2011 with about 21K miles on it. I have been really good about changing the oil and overall servicing the car. I sent an oil sample to Blackstone with 65K miles on it. The report said everything was good. I sent another sample to Blackstone with just over 100K, also came back stating everything was good. after deciding that I really like my bimmer and planned on keep it, I decided to have the bearings replaced. I have attached a few photos of the bearings. I am glad I had it done, they look pretty worn. Also, the engine is quieter than before the new bearings.

That honestly doesn't look too bad for 100k Miles.

ACL is a recognized brand in motorsports and has recently started offering rod bearings for the S65. After performing installations for a couple of M3s that supplied their own ACL bearings, I decided to also give them a try on my own M3. Luckily there little wear on the OEM bearings @ 81K mi, but was glad to have peace of mind that this issue was taken care of.

We are happy to announce we are now offering customers a choice of WPC treated or ACL bearings during service

In mine and most other cases the standard ACL- H is the bearing to use depending on the measurements. For increased tolerance we recommend the HX series but that varies based off desired clearance.

Doesnt look great for that low mileage. Would you say S85 shells wear worse than S65 even though same shells and shaft diam Tom?

It's hit or miss like S65. Some have little to no wear, others look like the above bearings. There's no way of absolutely knowing until torn apart.

Luckily, we were able to keep another S85 on the road.

Has anyone torqued up a stock connecting rod with ARP bolts and checked to see if it changed the housing bore size? You certainly wouldn't want to discover that different bolts were distorting the HB toward the lower size limit or beyond.
