MotoIQ: Project E90 M3 Part 1: Testing ESS Tuning's ECU & DCT Software

Hey guys,

MotoIQ now has Project E90 M3. Check out the first installment where we dyno test and review ESS Tuning's E-Flash ECU and DCT Transmission software on our otherwise bone-stock M3:

Great article for those looking for an in-depth perspective on the ESS Flash tune, added it to the FAQ for others to read as well.

Looking forward to part 2!

I hate that this guy only discusses the DCT software in regards to D mode... He even comments on how he likes that it defaults to D after adding the software. I've probably driven my car in D mode once or twice, but it's nice to have for the fiance.

There was a lot of issues with the stock D-mode that the ESS DCT flash addressed. I think manual mode was covered.

From the article:

"The DCT has always been great in manual mode but my only gripe is that it only blips on downshifts in the highest S6 setting and downshifts in any lower setting are not as smooth......The upshifts are lightning fast and just as good as any dual-clutch GTR, Porsche, or VW transmission that I’ve driven.

On the other hand, I have a lot of issues with the transmission in automatic mode........

The ESS M3 Performance DCT Transmission Software completely transforms the car....In manual mode, the upshifts are quicker and smoother. Seamless quick shifting would hit the descriptive nail on the head. Upshifts in all S modes just seem better programmed and refined and the car will chirp the tires all the way to 4th gear."

What more is there to say? The ESS software improves what is already one of the best dual-clutch transmissions out there.

The blip in settings below S6 was minimal and almost non-existent at lower rpm, causing the car to lurch forward a little on downshifts. The ESS DCT software does a better job at smoothing out the downshifts at all RPMs at all settings with more effective rev-matches.

Test car was a 2009 and while high rpm downshifts did have blips, at lower RPM, S4 & S5 did not have much of a blip and post-DCT flash greatly improved downshifts in all settings at all rpms. I'm not sure if anything has changed in later models. (I don't think so and the 240E software is not suppose to affect shifting, but when uploading the 240E software, it did seem to improve shifting a little -no where near what the DCT flash did though).

I apologize if the article isn't written very clearly. It's a 24whp peak to peak gain and a 32whp maximum gain (6,812rpm). Still one of the highest gains i've seen from a tune alone.
