I drive on W. Alabama all the time near Spur 527. I'll be on the look-out for this Road Hazard!

Sorry to hear about the injury. Judging by the manhole picture, it must have been a freakish event--you must have managed to hit it just right. I can see why you would think it was okay to straddle.

I feel your pain on the high taxes/crappy roads front. Metro NYC and its suburbs are just as bad. The graft lives on...

The engine is fine.

The car needs a new oil pan (no surprise there) and a new transmission.

Regarding the transmission, as far as I can tell, it only dented the case, but the SE said it had to be replaced.

That is OK by me.

I should get the car back next week.

I will post another update then.

Thanks for the sympathy. I cannot tell y'all how eager I am to get back into my own car.

Yes by all means contact the city of Houston. Just dial 311 and tell them you want money. hahahhaahahahaha

When you get your car back, take a romp down Allen Parkway.

Dayum...you drove 6 blocks with the oil pan ventilated?
Have them send the oil out for analysis to make sure there's no metal in it.
Remember this sad story?

In the hill country, yes...in bombed-out hellholes like Houston, not so much.

Actually I'd bet any major city has some roads that get neglected in the US, but mostly they're fine...not as nice as Germany, but most people here aren't willing to invest in perfect roads, so we get what we pay for... Walmart roads.

You're in CA, right?

Must be reading Perry's Propaganda.

I really love Texas, and Houston, but don't believe anything that Gov Hair says.

There, fixed that for you.

I used to live right across the street from West Alabama Icehouse back in the mid-90's, and drove this exact way to work downtown every day. Roads were the same then.

I've not heard of anyone getting it, but in a defensive driving class I had, the instructor said that damage to cars from streets will be paid by Harris county (or Texas) if you can prove it (like a photo of the screwed up street and a photo of the screwed up car)

You should give DPS or the Harris county tax adjuster a call (or both)! And do it right away in case they want a police report - which can only be filed 24hrs (or 48?) after the fact maximum.

I have 127,000 M miles on Houston and Texas roads and no damage. Don't let this be an excuse not to own the best car on the planet.

You do have drive like you are off-roading though - watch carefully for what those tires are headed for!

One of my clients in Houston tried and they basically told her to go pound sand

GEICO is being very civil about this, but they have not yet made their appraisal. That will happen Tuesday or Wednesday. All the auto adjusters are in Dallas because of the hail storm they had.

I am hopeful, and thanks for all the comments. I will post an update when I get more information.
