Brake pedal travel

I had brand new pads put in my car about a month ago. Dumb mistake on my part was not realizing the rotors were worn down to the minimum thickness. Long story short, I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to bbk.

Tonight my buddy helped me installed the bbk (stoptech st60/40). After the install we took it out to bed in the pads and first thing I noticed was the pedal travel. Before with on oem brakes with new pads I can engage the brakes when I press the pedal about 1/4” to 1/2” . Now with the stoptech I feel the pedal needs to go down to about 1/2”+ to engage the brakes. Pretty sure we bled the brakes properly. My buddy is a master tech at Mercedes and he was quite thorough. He drove tested the brakes out and said it feels normal, wouldn’t know about the travel if I didn’t tell him.

This normal for the stoptech? Performance wise the bbk grabs and stops on a dime.

I don’t remember the side by side comparison. And I’m not a brake expert to say it’s normal, but I can tell you mine feel just like you describe. It could be because the with OE brakes you’re filling 4 cylinders with fluid to stop but now you’re filling 20 cylinders with fluid to stop. More pedal more brake fluid

What kind of fluid did you go with? Did you change all the brake lines including the rear inners? Heat them up and wait till that fluid expands and they get super touchy.. make sure you follow the stop tech bed in process which isn't convenient but important for brake performance. You could pick up a laser temp gun and just check temperatures on all four corners and compare them side to side. I never noticed a further pedal travel when I did mine but there very well could of been.

What pads are you using? Performance pads tend to operate in a higher temp range than OEM pads and so feel mushier when cold.

Pads are just the stoptech sports pads. Pretty sure there aren’t any air in the lines. The pedal doesn’t feel spongy. It is firm when I step on it, it is just the engagement point of the pedal is a bit further down than before with new oem pads.

I think there is also a procedure to bleed the abs system. Did you keep the brake pedal pressed down when opening the lines? Keeping the pedal pressed down helps

Yup. Did everything by the book.

Took the car out today... pretty sure the pedal travel/feel is from the pads. Was rolling downhill in neutral, very gently rested my foot on the pedal and could feel it was slowing down the car. Obviously if I brake normally it’ll grab instantly. Again, pedal is solid when I step on it. No spongy feel or anything and pedal goes no where near to the floor.

But would still like to hear input from others, especially if you have stoptech sports pad.

I don't recall feeling a noticeable difference in pedal feel when I installed my Stoptech kit, but I can tell you that IMO the Stoptech Sport pads have less initial bite than just about any other pad - especially OEM pads. That means that it takes more pressure and pedal to get the same amount of initial stopping feel.

Don't get me wrong, I love them. I've had mine for over 50k miles and they still have most of the pad left. Just less initial bite.

Whenever you do a 4 caliper and line swap it's going to require multiple bleeds to get it all the air bubbles out. Do another bleed, 2 man method (not pressure bleeder) with someone in the car pumping the pedal. Multiple cycles at each wheel, RR>LR>RF>LF. Be careful not to let the reservoir go dry, or you're back to square one. I installed an essex AP front-only BBK last year and it took about the 3 bleeds to get it optimized, but worth it. I now have significantly less slop in the pedal than when I was stock.

This is normal, assuming you have bled everything properly. The OEM brakes are touchy and the StopTech kit is giving you a more linear pedal feel.

Try re-bedding if you feel like it's still not right.

Thanks for the responses.

Quick update, everything is good after driving the car around for a bit. Didn't need to re-bleed or re-bed. The initial bite is much much better than right after the install.
